Location/Hotel Recommendation for elderly couple

Hello,

Need advice for an elderly couple arriving Venice at San Marco Airport & looking to stay 2 nights before boarding a major cruise ship. They have lots of luggage but limited mobility to deal with it.

Where is a good place for them to book a hotel ( a nice one ) in Venice that is easy to reach from the airport & get to the cruise ship without much hassle with the bags.

Is the Alilaguna ferry accomodating enough or would they need to lug everything themselves on & off ? They want to be able to walk around in Venice. The travel agent recommends a CrownPlaza way above the airport that seems so far from Venice to me. Isnt there a better location for them ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My first questions are: 1. Can they afford an expensive solution or are they looking for cheapest solution? 2. How mobile are they? Venice is one of the worst places for people with limited mobility to visit. Many bridges with steps to climb. How many bags are they dealing with?

Marco Polo airport, , Hotels in the Piazzale Roma would suit, there is a Bus from directly outside the Terminal to go there,

from there a Land Taxi would be a good option,

If expense is not an option then hire somebody to do all the hassle for them.

A hostess that meets the flight organises porterage to the taxi and then escorts the couple to the hotel .

Then water taxi on departure to the port .

Pick a hotel with guaranteed water access - so those on the Grand Canal . Ca Sagredo , Palazzo Giovenelli, St Angelo , Principe, or more in the centre , Monaco and Grand Canal, Europa , Gritti , Luna Baglioni.

OR : As Sophie says Land taxi to Piazzale Roma and then use porters to take you to the nearby hotels . Then the same in reverse and take a land taxi to the ship. Look at Arlecchino, Olympia , Papadopoli.

A regular poster will come along and give you a huge cut and posted post on staying in Mestre - for a mature couple I would not advise this for the inconvenience of going in and out and the lack of seating on the buses.

They are mobile, but he has breathing & stamina issues. In their mid 70's. They are not the type to look for the cheapest, comfort & quality would be more important than price. They can manage liesurely walking at their own pace through Venice, but not lugging baggage along or lots of steps & climbing.

Dragging luggage is not easy for anybody in Venice. Just bite the bullet and get them a private water taxi from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the cruise ship. Taxi drivers will help load/unload luggage and will also give them a hand in getting in/out of the boat.

We've stayed at 2 hotels with a private water taxi landing:

I am 84 so I suppose I count as elderly.

Venice has its problems for the elderly as it is entirely pedestianised once past Piazzale Roma. I always take a private water taxi from Marco Polo direct to my Hotel and always make sure the Hotel is on a canal so that the launch can reach it directly. I opt out of the walk nowadays from the Arrivals Hall to the landing stage and hire a land taxi to take me the relatively short distance round the airport roads as I now find the direct footpath to the landing stage is more than I wish to tackle with luggage.

The problem with the Alilaguna ferry from Marco Polo, apart from it being slow, is that you will be left at one of the few landing stages Alilaguna use in Venice and will the have to carry your luggage yours vles to wherever you are staying

To get to to your cruise ship in Stazione Marittima you can either take another private water taxi from your Hotel into Stazione Marittima or, much cheaper, take a water bus from the landing stage nearest your Hotel to Piazzale Roma and there take a land taxi which will take you in to Stazione Marittima to wherever your cruise ship is moored.which may be a considerable distance form the entrance to the Stazione.

Hotels which I have used in the past with good access from a canal include the Gritti Palace (very much a luxury Hotel so expensivve), and the San Cassiano on the Grand Canal, the Bucintoro on the San Marco Basin (marvellous views), the Al Sole Palace (Santa Croce - mediocre) and in Dorsoduro most recently the Accademia-Villa maravege, the American-Dinesen and La Calcina. All have good access on a canal so are easily reached by a private water taxi. The Gritti Palace and La Calcina are the closest to water bus landing stages.

Additional NICE hotels with private water taxi are: Luna Baglioni and Bauer & Il Palazzo. When you confirm a hotel, mention to the confirming company there is a mobility problem, so the room will be in a convenient area of the hotel.

If you can confirm a transfer on arrival, the hotel can confirm a departure transfer. Both mentioned hotels are in a very central area with private water taxi docks.

We used Groundlink.com 2 years ago for private transfers from the airport to hotel in Venice and they were right on it! Going to cruise dock, we had the hotel arrange a private water taxi transfer.

I would recommend they stay at a hotel in Mestre, near the Mestre railway station. Quite a few seniors book a room here prior to their cruise. They can easily take a taxi to the cruise port from their hotel when they're ready to board the ship.

There are frequent trains and buses from Mestre to Venice that take around fifteen minutes to get to Piazzale Roma, the gateway to Venice—which is a little over two miles from Mestre.

You very often get a much better hotel room (larger and more modern) for your money. Plus, you won’t have to carry heavy luggage aboard crowded vaporetti, across stepped bridges, and up narrow staircases to get to your hotel room—a big advantage for seniors and those with disabilities, particularly during periods of heavy flooding.

Below are five excellent, inexpensive hotels near or opposite the train station in Mestre that come with a bountiful free buffet breakfast. Have a look at the TripAdvisor reviews by people who recently stayed at these hotels.

The Best Western Hotel Bologna, directly in front of the Mestre railway station.

At the Marco Polo airport there is an ATVO bus (€6) that will take them to the Mestre train station in 17 minutes. (Venice Marco Polo Airport-Mestre—Fly Bus-Express Service (€11 round-trip).

Mestre Airport Buses:

They might consider buying a Tourist Travel Card ACTV, which entitles you to unlimited use of the waterbuses (vaporetti) serving Venice and the islands of the lagoon, and to unlimited use of ACTV Mestre land bus service to and from Venice and in Mestre itself—and land buses on Lido.

ACTV Tourist Travel Cards, which can be purchased either on line, at the airport, in Mestre, or in Venice, are a tremendous bargain that will pay for themselves many times over during your visit to Venice. Although the on line discount is no longer available, the links below will provide information about cost and card selection, regardless of where you plan to make your purchase.

ACTV buses taken from the airport now cost €6—or €4 if purchased with the ACTV Tourist Travel Card.

There is not much in Mastre. They would have to rail from Mastre to Santa Lucia and then get a water taxi into the heart of Venice and back out and then rail back again.Or, return to the airport and go from there. IIF I am understanding you correctly.

We were picked up by car at the airport, bags loaded for us, driven to water taxi dock at Piazzale Roma, loaded on a water taxi and went straight to our hotel, where our luggage was unloaded for us.

I think this couple need some assistance.
