Last fall we stayed at Hotel Gardena, right across the grand canal from the railroad station on a small side canal. About 100 meters along that canal fronting the hotel is Bacareto da Lele, the best bargain sandwich shop in Venice. Opens at 0500 and sells small sandwiches with a choice of meats for breakfast, lunch, and supper at .75 Euros, a glass of wine is 1 Euro. Sodas are also available. We ate there twice a day and only saw locals stopping there. It's takeaway only but you can lounge by the canal or sit on the steps of a nearby church. Two sandwiches and two glasses of wine each came to 7Euros. Fresh, hot breakfast sandwiches are great and they have coffee too.

Off the beaten track away from the main tourist drag cappucinos for €1.50 ( at the bar). Brec on the lista di spagna is reasonable as are most places if you stand up. Sitting generally calls for a supplement but not all places.

There are quite a lot of places where you can stock up for a picnic in Venice. Our favourite place to buy a piece of pizza and an ice cream to eat on the hoof or on a seat in one of Venice's wonderful squares is in Ruga Vecchie San Giovanni (I think) - west of the Rialto bridge. Take your picnic to Campo Santa Margherita (campo = square), Campo San Barnaba or any other place that takes your fancy.

We like to have more than one holiday abroad per month, so look for the cheaper options. Take a travel kettle and some tea bags. The coffee is OK in Italy but the Italians haven't a clue about tea: make some drinks in your hotel room. If breakfast isn't included in the hotel price buy some bread rolls the night before and have breakfast in bed with a nice cup of tea. Have a picnic lunch, say in the Giardini della Biennale park. Eat in a cheap restaurant at night.

Hi Oprah, The Giardino Papadopoli is close to that takeaway and looks a good place for a picnic??? Thanks for that tip!

Try Bar Squero, opposite, would you believe, one of Venice's last remaining squeri on Fondamenta Nani in Dorsoduro. Very reasonably priced spritz and coffee and a wide range of crostini. It is a very popular spot.

If you are near or in Campo Santa Stefano, take Calle alle Botteghe and facing you at the end is Alimentari de Rossi. Here they will be happy to make up rolls to eat on the hoof. Stock up here on lovely cheeses and meats and then head for Campo San Samuele. It's a nice little sun trap Campo and for such a small place has more than its fair share of benches.
