What to do in 5 hours near St. Lucia train station?

We have about 5 hours wait at St. Lucia train station. What could we do in this time to explore Venice a bit? Not that fussed on going on one of the expensive Gondolas. Is it nice just to walk around the area along the canal? Any Restaurant recommendations? Many thanks in advance.

Take Vaporetto to Piazza San Marco (Line 1) this goes the length of the Grand Canal, approx 30 minutes,

make your way back to the Station via Rialto, very well signposted,

Stop for a tramezzini or two and a glass of Prosecco. :)

The area around the station is not the best to spend 5 hours. Definitely take Sophie's advice. The vaporetto, as Sophie mentions, takes about 30 mins. to get to San Marco. You can easily spend a couple of hours there then catch the vaporetto from San Marco back to SL. You would be back in plenty of time to catch the train, having seen some of the best of Venice and the most unforgettable boat ride you are likely to have. Try and get a seat outside and in the front.

I agree with riding the vaporetto along the Grand Canal to Piazza San Marco and coming back by the Vaporetto. Although there are signage along the way one can easily get lost too and that could eat into your time. The vaporetto ride is simple and straight forward.

Take the Vaporetto as I said to San Marco but you could walk then to Rialto (this is very straight forward)

and catch a Vaporetto there back to the Station you would see a little more of Venice by doing that,

Thank you all for the great advise. We'll do that Vaporetto (I had to google what that means..ha, ha) return trip to San Marco. I like the prosecco idea Anna-Roz! Love the Aperol Spritz too. Any suggestions for a nice lunch place not too far from St. Lucia, before we board the train? I guess there is a baggage storage at the train station somewhere? Gracie

There is baggage storage at the Station, if you do go to Rialto it is ideal for lunch, better value than around San Marco,

You should not be wasting time eating when you can be wandering around Venice! :-)

Actually there are some good things to see near the station. The Scalzi Church is open most of the time, and has some interesting items - the tomb of the last Doge, for instance. See churchesofvenice.co.uk/cannaregio2.htm#scalzi

A little bit further is San Geremia - churchesofvenice.co.uk/cannaregio.htm#sanger - with the remains of St Lucy.
