Venice to salzburg train route?

We are planning to travel from venice to Salzburg in December via train. We have to leave in the morning and be in Salzburg that evening. Currently the option that we are looking at is going Venice- Verona. Then Verona - Innsbruck and finally Innsbruck - Salzburg. We leave Venice at 8:50am and reach Salzburg at 6:03pm. Does anyone have any better ways of travelling between these places?

The bus / train route Venice to Villach (bus) and then train Villach to Salzburg is slightly quicker and a very popular route. The bus / trains are an excellent way to travel between Italy ad Austria, very very comfortable.

The route described, departing at 08:50 and arriving at 18:03, takes 9 hours! You presumably know that the only direct train is the night train from Mestre (dep. 21:09, arr. 04:09 = 7 hrs) but if you want to be in Salzburg in the evening - depending on what exactly you mean by evening - you can do it in 5 1/2 hrs with just 1 change in Villach, taking the 16:11 train from Mestre and arriving at 21:48. Just because you have to leave your hotel in Venice in the morning (if this is the case) doesn't necessarily mean you have to go straight to Salzburg.

But if you want to arrive in Salzburg by the early evening, it seems to me that the best route would indeed be the ÖBB bus + train option via Villach, taking 6h18; with departures from Venice (Tronchetto) at 09:20 arr. 15:48 or 11:20 arr. 17:48.

Thanks so much for bringing up the option of going via bus from venice to villach, and then taking a train from villach to salzburg. We looked at this and it definitiely seems to be a more efficent option of travelling between venice and salzburg.

We looked at this option and the timetable seems to show options where there is only a half hour gap between when the bus is due to arrive in villach, and the train departs from villach to salzburg. Would half an hour be enough to get off the bus, collect our luggage and board the train in the station/ We just don't want to risk missing the train!

The OEBB Intercity bus is designed to interconnect with the train at Villach, so you should not have any problems transferring (you could also search the Villach forum or the Salzburg forum for posts from people who have done so). Note that Villach Hbf is just across from the bus stop.

Here is a link to the timetable connections
