Walking time - and a few more vaporetto questions

We will be staying at the Hotel Al Sole near the Piazzale Roma and would like to walk to the Rialto Bridge Market, then walk to the Fondamenta Nove to catch the vaporetto to Murano, then to Burano, finally coming back to the San Marco area.

Just to have a general idea of walking times (I realize it'll probably take us twice as long to allow time for pictures and gawking), how long would it normally take to walk:

- from the Piazzale Roma to the Rialto Bridge

- from the Rialto Bridge to Fondamenta Nove

What line do we catch to Murano?

Which line goes from Murano to Burano?

Which line goes from Burano to San Marco?

Which line goes from San Marco to Piazzale Roma?

Is it faster to catch the vaporetto from San Marco to Piazzale Roma, or walk?

Thank you!

it is over 30 years since my wife and I stayed at the Al Sole. It is about a kilometre to walk to the Rialto bridge but a fairly twisting route so do take a good street map with you. From the Rialto to F. Nove is rather less, about 800 metres but again not straightforward so a map is also necessary.

From F. Nove take the 4.1 or 4.2 but make sure they are on their Murano leg as these vaporetti also sail from F. Nove east and west along the north shore of Venice with the 4.1 going west and the 4.2 east. Both lines go to all the 6 landing stages on Murano. I get off at Museo for the Glass Museum and the lovely church of Santi Maria e Donato but Faro and colonna are better for the glass factories.

To get from Murano to Mazzorbo, Burano and Torchello take the No 12 from Faro landing stage

To go direct from Burano to San Marco you will have to take the long way round the northern shore of the lagoon with the No 14 to the S. Marco-S. Zaccaria landing stage close to the Doge's Palace which leaves Burano hourly at 26 minutes past the hour and take 69 minutes. probably uicker to take the No 12 to F. Nove which takes 42 minutes and then walk.

from either S. Zaccaria or Vallaresso to Piazzale Roma you can go down the Grand Canal on the No 2 (faster) or the slightly slower No 1 water bus. You ask is it faster to walk - that depends on how fast you walk - faster if you run certainly but the route is a veryb usy and crowded one so I would always take the water bus and enjoy the views of the great palazzi lining the Grand Canal.

Walking time is about 20-25 minutes minimum for the first leg, 10-15 minutes minimum for the second, considering, as you note, gawking time excluded. You can also catch the n°12 line to the Murano Faro stop from Fondamente Nove, if the schedule were to match better. If you were to reverse the order of your visits to Burano and Murano, you could catch the n°7 line back to San Zaccaria/San Marco on the way back from Murano. To get from San Marco (San Zaccaria) back to Piazzale Roma, the quickest route is through the Giudecca Canal (the "outside" route) using the n° 4.2 or 5.2, which would almost certainly be quicker than walking.
