Our 2 and a half week trip to Puglia

After lots and lots (and lots!) of reading/notetaking/talking about pages and pages of previous Tripadvisor Postings (thanks to all of you!) we have now put a shape to our July/Aug visit this year!

We think we will confine our trip to south of Bari to allow us time to explore and time to relax.

These are the bones of our trip:

Arrive Tues July 17th in Bari Airport at 19.20 and pick up a car - which we will have for the entire holiday

Stay not too far away for 2 nights - perhaps in Polignano a Mare (or even Trani?)

Matera for 2 nights

Alberobello for 1 night

Ostuni - Masseria Il Frantoio for 3 nights - to eplore Martina Franca etc

Lecce for 2 nights

Otranto - have booked Hotel Profumo de Mare for 7 nights - Sat July 28th to Sat August 4th. Eplore Santa Maria di Leuca etc from here.

Return car in Brindisi Airport and fly out from there on Sat August 4th at 11.05.

We still have another night not allocated - any suggestions on that? Also - would we be better advised to spend another night in the Masseria in Ostuni instead of staying in Alberobello and just day trip to Alberobello?

We would welcome all comments and suggestions.

Thanks to all

Great itinerary!! My only suggestion is you might want to reconsider staying 1 night in Alberbello, and do a day trip instead. The reason? I found that too much moving around can be exhausting and it's usually not worth it for just a one night stay... You're better applying that day to the maseria- it will be much more convenient & relaxing that way. Moreover, I've heard that Alberobello is highly touristy to the point of being a bit inauthentic.

good idea Matera is wonderful and Alberorello too, if you want and have rent a car from polignano you can stay in GINOSA MARINA is near from matera (40 minutes) and form Alberobello ( 40 minutes too) so you can stay on the sea and you can visit too metaponto isi near 10 minutes there is the temple of Hera you can see on wikipedia, bye

If it were me I would either add it on to the first part (Trani or Polignano) or the back end. That would really be optimal-especially that time of the year!

Agree both the itinerary and all the other posts - including the idea that Alberobello is maybe better worth doing only as a day trip, to marvel at the most touristic crowds in Puglia, and the fact that unlike other places, all the trulli are souvenir shops (altho people say it's a different place at night after the tour buses depart).

If you were to saty an extra night, for example in Polognano, you could see if there is any availability in our favourite 'bed and breakfast' there (As you probably know, ' B e B' means self catering apartment, and if you are happy with a few stairs and if it's free in high season you might rent all or part of this 2, 4 or 6 plus apartment with its own little sea view roof terrace in a charming old town building. Contact is direct with the owner who lives nearby - info@casamarebeb.com or www.casamarebeb.com).

And if visiting Martina Franca,

martinafrancatour.it/inglese/introduzione.asp

where we used to have a little apartment, don't be put off by the scruffy outskirts, but work through these, park wherever you can and head on foot for the 'centro storico', through the arch by the Ducal Palace- now the town hall. Nor by the fact that if you visit between 1pm-5pm the town shuts down with no shops open and no-one on the streets except for other tourists. Even the local 'Cafe Tripoli' shuts but you can lunch in one of the few restaurants on the little collonaded Piazza Plebescito in the centre past the cathedral, or better still, head there at night when local people parade in the narrow pedestrian alleys.

Otranto has a wierd and wonderful array of skulls and bones from pirate raids in its cathedral, and you'll love the fishy lunches anywhere along the quieter Adriatic coast roads from Polignano, thru Savelettri, Torre Canne, or much further south to Santa Cesare Terme, where we ran into a wedding party who insisted on sending us groaning platefuls from their massive seafood buffet when all we wanted was a light snack!

Ciao
