6 nights - Puglia or Sicily?

We are planning our honeymoon for late September/early October and have decided to start in Paris then spend time in Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna. We originally planned to spend the last 6 nights in Puglia, but the more I read the more it seems like we would spend a lot of our time traveling between places. We would split it up with 3 nights in the southern part and 3 nights in the northern part - but it seems like we would still spend a lot of time traveling to see the things we want to see. So now we are considering Sicily instead. I would love some advice on which region we should choose. It seems clear that we would need a car in Puglia, is the same true for Sicily?

We love good food and exploring beautiful cities/towns, we aren't huge on museums, we like nature/natural beauty. We love cities/towns by the water - although we would likely only spend half of a day or maybe one full day actually at the beach. We loved Positano and Rome, and Venice is one of my absolute favorite cities.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Congrats jamaes22!

Yes, you will see that you work a bit harder for what you see with distances between destinations and attractions in Puglia, and Puglia is best explored by car.

You would not require a car in Sicily.

Fly to Catania, and divide your time between Taormina and Siracusa.

See Mount Etna from Taormina, and Noto from Siracusa.

Auguri!

Thank you Vagabonda! Should we split our time evenly? Is there more to see/do in one area versus the other? Thanks!

Prego jamaes22,

Between Puglia and Sicily, or between Taormina and Siracusa?

There's more to see in Sicily than Puglia.

And there's more to see in Siracusa than Taormina, but Taormina is an excellent base for tours and excursions, even to Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, or the Aeolian Islands.

Enjoy!

Thank you. Between Siracusa and Taormina - would recommend we do 4 nights in Siracusa and 2 in Toarmina?

Prego jamaes22,

The number of nights would depend on your intended day trip destinations, and what you'd like to do in Taormina.

Late September is still beach weather, so if you'd like to spend time on the beach, you would do that in Taormina.

And also consider Mount Etna. If you plan to visit, then also consider the type of trekking you'd like to do, half or full day.

And perhaps any other excursions from Taormina.

So you might equally divide your time between both towns, or you might spend two nights in Taormina, and four nights in Siracusa, even with the idea that you could spend the day after your second night in Taormina still in Taormina, and then arrive in Sracusa for that night, thus positioning for a full next day in Siracusa.

Great! Thank you! And one more logistical question - does it matter which city we stay in first? We will be flying in and out of Catania- our flight out of Catania is on a Sunday - is it easier to get from one city versus the other back to Catania?

What time is your departing flight?

Interbus runs direct bus service between both towns and Aeroporto Catania.

On the current schedule, the first bus departs Taormina on a Sunday at 8:45.

The first bus departs Siracusa at 8:00.
