Local festivals, folk dancing and music

Hi, everyone. Our initial attraction to Sardinia is through the enchanting folk dancing and music performances that we have seen in the U.S., though clearly these are just the beginning of the many wonders of the island. We are hoping to visit in the spring or the fall of next year, and would love to see and hear the folk dancers and singers, possibly in relation to a local Patron Saint celebration, and plan the rest of our trip around that. Can anyone please direct us to a way of finding the times and places that these festivals are held? We would be most grateful.

Thanks in advance, Laurie

The Sartiglia in Oristano is one of the most known.

At Easter time religious celebrations or parades are scheduled all around the island.

Patron Saint celebrations are held in Sardinia all year round and they all have the folk dancers and singers. They are really impressive.

This site has some dates but the list is not comprehensive: agricamping.it/santi-patroni-sardegna.htm. For example Ozieri is not in the list and has a celebration in September. San Simplicio (Olbia) celebration is in mid May and lasts one week.

Thanks so much. We have decided to go with the mid-May weekend of the Sardinian Cavalcade in Sassari, which looks like an extravaganza of folk music and dancing, but will be staying in Alghero. Does anyone know whether we will have trouble parking in Sassari on Sunday morning? I imagine it will be very crowded that day. Or would we do better to come in by bus or train from Alghero?

Thanks, fellow travel enthusiasts. Laurie

I really recommend that you travel to Sassari by public transport on that day. It's difficult enough to find a parking space on normal days in Sassari....... unless ......you leave the car somewhere on the outskirts and take a bus to the centre.
