10 days in June

Hi, we're visiting Sicily for the first time in June.

These are our plans;

- We arrive in Catania. Staying 3 nights in Syracuse or Modica (still hesitating!). Visiting the southeast.

- Staying 3 nights in Scopello. Visiting Zingaro national Park, Erice and maybe Favignana.

- Staying 2 nights in Palermo or Cefalu

- Last 2 nights spending in Catania and visiting the Etna

What do you think? I find it very dificult choosing the best itinary!

Are there maybe better options?

Thank you!

Too many hotels, too much packing and unpacking.... see an earlier post on choosing where to stay in Sicily.... choose one side of the island, stay the full time in one hotel. Take day trips on local public transport. Chill out on the beach on alternate days.... Enjoy your trip and look forward to the next one !

Welcome to Sicily Marlies09!

Will you hire a car?

Could you possibly open jaws your itinerary to save time – Arriving in Catania and departing from Palermo?

Avoid driving in Palermo and Catania.

If you plan to hire a car, stay in Cefalù, not Palermo.

And possibly base in Taormina rather than Catania, and visit Mount Etna from Taormina.

Thanks!

We're used to stay in several hotels when we're travelling, so staying 10 nights in one hotel is not an option.

We certainly will hire a car. Does anyone know a good company?

I was thinking to drop off our car in Palermo to get rid of it. Then go to Catania by bus or so. I'm a bit afraid that Palermo is very busy and dirty, so maybe we'll just skip it. Or is Palermo really a must see?

Ciao Marlies09,

Consider AutoEuropeUK for reliable service and competitive rates – AutoEurope matches competitor’s lowest rates.

Palermo is a treasure-trove, but large and gritty, and not for everyone.

Return the car at Palermo’s airport and take the Prestia e Comandè bus from the airport to the city – BUT Cefalù may be a better match for you.

If you were to stay in Palermo, then take the SAIS Autolinee service to Catania.

If you were to stay in Cefalù, you might then also stay in Taormina. But if you'd to stay in Catania, return the car at the airport and take the AMT Alibus 457 to the city.

Thanks for your tips!

Why is it better to visit Mt. Etna from Taormina in stead of Catania?

It may not be better to visit from Taormina….

If you’d like to take public transport to Etna, the only public transport that runs to Etna is a once daily AST bus from Catania via Nicolosi. Excursions also run from Catania.

But since Taormina is such a popular tourist destination, there are many excursions, group bus trips, and also private tours to Etna from Taormina.

If you enjoy large cities, then stay in Catania, but not with a car.

So, once again I've changed my plans, hopefully for the last time.

I've decided to skip Palermo, Cefalu and Taormina (too many tourists?)

Here it is:

- 3 nights Modica (visiting Syracuse, Noto, ...)

- 3 nights Scopello (visiting Zingaro Park and Segesta)

- 2 nights Trapani (visiting Erice and Favigna)

- 2 nights Catania (visiting Mt. Etna)

I hope I've made the right choice.

Comments are always welcome :-)

Ciao Marlies09,

Assessing and making changes is all part of the process! :-)

It’s a diverse and interesting itinerary….

Since you’ll be hiring a car, why not stay a night in one of Etna’s base town like Nicolosi and avoid backtracking from Catania? Then return the car at Catania’s airport and take the AMT Alibus to the city and enjoy your last night in Catania.

Prego Marlies09,

Nicolosi is a very local Etna base town, a gateway town to Rigugio Sapienza, and a perfect town for visiting Etna.

Nicolosi would be en route to Catania and you would save time backtracking from Catania. You would also be able to return the car at the airport en route to Catania with no concerns about driving within the city.

And you would be able to enjoy a visit to Etna in early morning when Etna is at its best!

The owners at La Giara are excellent resources for the area.
