Trapani vs Castellamara del Golfo as base

Originally was going to book 2 nights in Marsala to use point however after looking over what we wished to see, Erice, Segeste, Monreale felt Trapani but now thinking maybe Castellamara instead. We are visiting in March so things may be closed due season. We have a car so do not need public transport which it seems Trapani is the best base for. Need to decide soon.

I stayed 2 weeks in Castllammare with my rental car in Feb 2010. We had free parking near the hotel. Access to A29 from Castellamare is good and driving in town is not stressful. Driving in Trapani just to get to A29 dir was stressful because of all the chaotic, stressful driving. The historic area of Trapani is a pedestian zone only. If you want to park your car you have to park some distance away near the train station to get away from the hourly meters (looked like they only took coins).

Castellamare in evfen Feb had restaurants open in differernt price ranges. Form the Hot table on the way to A29

our favorite place near the "stairs"

from Castellammare we visited Erice, Segesta, Selinunte, Marsala, Mozia, Trapani, Zingaro Nature preserve, and Agrigento

Thanks so much for your quick reply. The reason we are not staying in Palermo is we wanted a less stressful time so seems to reason I guess with your description of Trapani a reason to go to Castellamara. Had only recently seen TA mention of it, more as a gateway to the National Park area so glad to hear things are open in off season. Seems most places do not have onsite parking in Sicily and hopefully with all the mention of car thieves definitely a consideration as to where to stay. Where did you stay in Castellamara? One area better than another?

Ciao 4vrongo,

Castellammare del Golfo would be a fine base, as would Trapani, but since Trapani is a small city, there are more options for accommodations and restaurants - Castellammare del Golfo is a town, much smaller than Trapani, less stressful, but also very quiet during the low season.

Onsite parking is possible at many hotels, even in Trapani, and also including B&B accommodations in the historic centre like Le Chiavi di San Francesco Residence.

You might consider driving to Monreale – Monreale is best seen by bus from Palermo.

We were originally supposed to stay a week in Trapani, but a problem developed with our lodging. within Trapani on the way to our lodging, we stopped twice at stoplights and pedestrians riffled the door to our car, but we had locked the doors thankfully. After that, when the problem with our lodging developed, we decided to drive back to Castllammare and see if our hotel Al Madarig would take us back at the same rate. several nights during the week in Feb we were the only lodgers so it was no problem.

My vote would be Trapani. Kind of small city or large town and we certainly had no safety issues. Heaps of restaurants and very pleasant asmosphere.

We stayed at this hotel in Trapani and found it very safe and convenient. Included onsite parking that was locked at night and was on the edge of the main exit roads.

The Tiziano Hotel is a very hotel hotel option - Trapani is also known for many B&B accommodations and self-catering, and yes, the restaurant and trattorie options get better and better every year!!

Thank you lupaling and Vagabonda as well as others who replied. I think we have decided on Castellamara as we've heard back from Case d'anna and Cerri. Sounds like both are a good base for what we want to do however Trapani may have more options for restaurants etc. So looking forward to seeing the area.
