How best to travel from Sicily to Praino Amalfi Coast

After spending 10 days in Sicily in April , my husband and I ( plus 14 year old principessa) will leave Sicily for the Amalfi Coast for 6 nights before flying home from Rome.We will be hiring a car in Sicily and so thought to drive to Praino (both confident drivers /navigators ) but wonder if there is an easier option . On day 10 of trip will be closest to Catania so could fly to Naples and bus or Ferry to destination .Or train to Salerno??

All suggestions gratefully recieved

It would probably take about 10 hours to drive to Salerno. That's counting stopping for a meal, bathroom breaks, gas, etc. The train would take 7-8 hours, but what's nice about that is that you can sleep, eat, and use the bathroom without adding time to the trip. A ferry would be slow.

A flight would be quick, but you've got to get to the airport early, watch how much luggage you have, and then from Naples it's another 90 minutes by private driver, bus, etc. Not an answer but things to consider.

Welcome to Sicily pearl23!

Avoid the drive and the train, and fly or take a ferry – The A3 is constantly under construction; the train is less than optimal, often tardy, and no food service....

Flying is fast, the ferry avoids an overnight hotel stay.

car rental or train from naples to Palermo: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187768-i20-k42546…

Fly Air Italy from Catania to Naples, or take the TTT Lines from Catania to Naples.

We drove last week from Taormina to Amalfi. It took about 8 hours including the ferry, and there was construction as Vagabonda has mentioned. (We left Taormina just before 9 and arrived just before 5, with one stop for a quick picnic lunch at a rest area. But remember, that was in February, not at a peak time of year when the Amalfi Drive might be more crowded, too.) Other than getting to Amalfi initially, we never used the car while we were there, and took advantage of SITA buses. We chose to drive because we needed the flexibility of the car before and after, and though driving through the mountains is beautiful, if you don't need a car, the other options might be faster and/or more relaxing for you.

Welcome back and thanks for the report Boodleheimer!

The A3 Reggio Calabria-Salerno has been undergoing a 15-year long reconstruction program, so there are always delays.

Traffic is lighter during this time of year and also lighter at night and early morning, but there are always trucks except for Sundays, and once the tourist season begins, traffic around the seaside becomes heavy, especially on weekends.

Prego, Vagabonda! Thank YOU for YOUR help in our planning! Our trip was wonderful (despite the hailstorm just as we reached the top in Erice! We literally couldn't get back down the hill for a bit until it melted). As we suspected, we'll need to return to Sicily because there was only so much we could see in one trip.

thankyou very much , nothing like a recent experience ! You say you ddint use your car at all once on the Amalfi .We are planning to stay 5 or 6 nights .I thought we would stayin one place and enjoy a slower pace ..with day trips to Capri Pompeii etc . That seems do able based on my reading but would be interested in your views . Also a good base for those days .Am thinking Praiono , Amalfi Atrani ? Many thanks for your time . P

Grazie Boodleheimer!

With its elevation, Erice occasionally has a dusting of snow in January or February, but the snow melts quickly and doesn’t stay around for long.

Until your return...
