1st time italy, 1st time sicily, 1st time Europe

Well yep this is our 1st time to europe and italy is one place that is on my bucket list.... so we have about 5 days in rome, plenty there to keep us busy, then we thought we would catch the train to Naples have maybe 3 days there to do the sights then jump on the train again to sicily have 5 days in sicily then have 4 nights in malta, That was our plan, we are going to be doing this in late november early december, How will the weather be for that time of year?

Some of my question are: should we go to Naples at all or do we just have more time in Sicily and malta,

Can we just base ourselves somewhere in Sicily or do we have to change accommodation half way through? We were not planning to hire a car, can we still get around ok though, coming from australia we are not really used to the motorways and such over there, just seems to be so much to do, but do not want to be overwhelmed and do lots of travelling and no stopping to enjoy the sights, would really appreciate any ideas , our time on malta will hopefully be a restful one before we head back home to work...

My husband and I will be travelling with our two sons 13 and 19, any help, advise would be appreciated

many of the other yrs els we met on Sicily did not have good things to say about Naples... very dirty, gritty and fast paced

we based in a villa in Scopello and did the interior south to coast and then western coast and up to San Vito lo capo on several day trips .... lots to see and do on the west ... good luck planning and have a great trip !!!

Welcome to Sicily shazbut_62!

November is low season - Outdoor venues close with darkness.

weather in southern Italy in late October-November:

Naples is a treasure trove, genuine and gritty, but not for everyone. Deciding about Naples is very subjective, and really only a question you can answer for yourself. If you like pristine and sanitised resorts, Naples would not be a destination for you. If you would like to experience a vibrant Southern Italian city, then you would enjoy Naples.

Avoid the train from Naples to Sicily – Fly Air Italy or Alitalia from Naples to Catania, or take the overnight TTT Lines ferry from Naples to Catania.

car rental or train from naples to Palermo:

Train Rome to Palermo:

With so little time, focus on Eastern Sicily and base in Siracusa.

Siracusa is well served by trains and buses. You could then take day trips to Noto, Ragusa, Catania, Taormina, Etna....

Fly Air Malta from Catania to Malta.

Best wishes!

We are in Sicily for a few days without a car and have based ourselves in Palermo.

We spent one day around palermo on the hop on hop off bus and to Monreale. A great day.

Then we hopped on a morning train from Palermo to Cefalu and spent the day at the beach resort and wandered through the old town. Another magnificant day before heading back to Palermo by train (1 hour each way).

Next we took the Cuffalo bus to Agrigenta (2 hours) and then the local bus from the bus station to the valley of the temples (3 stops). The temples were magnificant and we spent several hours there before getting the local bus to the train station and returned to Palermo. (2 hour trip). Magnificant scenery from both the bus and the train through central western Sicily.

A great time....

7. Re: 1st time italy, 1st time sicily, 1st time Europe

we have decided to go to Naples, as my son is a history nut, so Pompeii and Herculanium is a must, where would be the best place to stay to get to these places, we are not in italy to go to a resort we just want to experience the best italy has to offer, we would like to visit these historial sites by day adn then hopefully by night have a nice meal relax ready for the next day of explorations,

we are still undecided about whether to fly or ferry from naples to catania, the ferry would be a nights accomodation as well, but flying is obviously quicker

do the ferries run all year round as we will be there in december, I am having trouble looking up ferries am I looking a little to early for bookings in december??

once again any help would be greatly appreciated

You could stay in Naples or Sorrento – Naples is a treasure trove, genuine and very colourful, but gritty and not a “relaxing” destination, so Naples isn’t for everyone. The archaeological museum is outstanding.

Sorrento is a resort town, and also a convenient base for exploring via public transport.

Pompeii itself is also a possibility, but Pompeii isn’t the most attractive town, even if convenient for touring the ruins.

Flying to naples 2 whole days want to do pompeii & Rome.:

The Circumvesuviana connects Naples to Sorrento around the Bay of Naples.

Yes, the TTT Lines ferry between Naples and Catania runs year-round. It’s early for a Dece, ber booking.
