Western Sicily

Cara Vagabonda,

I'm thinking of returning to Sicily for a short 10-day trip, western Sicily this time. I've read a few of the past threads and you suggested Masala as a base for someone using public transportation.

I've read about Erice, and I know I'd love the place. Since it's on a hilltop, so it's not the most convenient as a base, that's why you suggested Masala over Erice. Can't find any info on Masala in guidebooks.

My personal preferences - love Ortigia, Modica, Ragusa Ibla. Palermo, Catania, Siracusa, Roma, Milano - not so.

Do you think I'd like Masala?

If so, I'd like to spend two nights in Erice, 3 or 4 nights in Masala, and a few nights on one of the Egadi islands, or perhaps Pantelleria. For some reason, Pantelleria sounds more exotic. Havne't done much research yet. Just thought about Sicily last night. This will be be early Sept 2013.

Grazie mille!

I'm sure that cannot be done in one day,

but what can I do by bus or Train on Sunday and then Wednesday and early Thursday,by car or I'.m thinking of only the car to get to Papa Town and to my Uncle town Cefalu on Tuesday

Can I get to Agrigento by car or wait is the easier way of doing this mess that I have floating around in my head

I am getting excited, but very nervous, 3 weeks and I'm in Naples and I have nothing set in my mind. Help Veronica

Yes vteotl, referring to you! :-)

You’ll find Trapani a convenient base!

Because Mazara del Vallo is located so far in Sicily's southwest, Mazara del Vallo is less than ideally situated for day trips, but a colourful town to soak the ambiance.

Spring is lovely, but September is as well, and prices are high in August and the heat is unbearable.

Albergo Aegusa is always a solid choice for B&B!

Terre del Sole is a good value and well located.

Cara Vagabonda,

It's Thursday night, my Italian meeting night. I'm still thinking in Italian. I actually started writing in Italian, then I remembered....

Thank you for the links to the B&Bs in Favignana.

Albergo Aegusa may seem more expensive, but after adding the price for the bedsheets and towels (if I'd read correctly) Terre del Sole is about the same price. From their websites, I prefer Aegusa.

Now, I'm thinking of the last two weeks of Sept. Less rain and the sea less choppy than Oct, hopefully.

I haven't decided on my day trips yet. Let's say I have 10 nights. 2 in Favignana, 4 in Trapani, 1 in Erice, last night in Roma. Where would be a good place for 2 nights. I don't plan to day trip to Agrigento.

Are there more flights between Trapani and Roma during the summer months? If I'd heard correctly from a friend, she said that she took an early 6:30 am flight to Rome, in time to catch her connecting flight back to the US. I've checked skyscanner; for the remaining days of Sept and early Oct this year, the only direct flights are at 11:45 am.

I read about Teatro Garibaldi in Mazala del Vallo. Can't find the website though. Are there still performances in that theatre? Ya, as though 4 operas in Feb isn't enough. :-)

Grazie.

"we can do Monreale, and Mondello, Castellamare and Segesta, "

Castellammare is a great base to explore from and has some good restaurants, but it really doesn't have that much to see in town. Unless you are goign to stop there to eat before going to Segesta, you can probably skip it.

Trapani centro is absolutely gorgeous and I hope it is not "awakening" to it's potential and becoming another Taormina. Keep this place a secret, please.

We rented apartments from Garibaldi Apartments which have a lovely seaview. If you can't get a seaview don't take it because the "city" views are just crummy rooftops. Also, if you have luggage, this is a hard one because the street doesn't allow vehicles so you have to park at one end and haul your bags. The "apartments" are really the size of a largish hotel room, but have a kitchen area with stove, sink, etc. Bathroom was modern, but they can't seem to work out shower drainage issues in Italy. Shower pans fill up and overflow.

Erice is a lovely old town, but I don't think you would want to be based there. Quite isolated. Can be busy during the day when visitors come up into the town and can overwhelm the main areas. Might be fun to overnight an experience the complete quiet and calm, along with the cool air. Can't say enough good things about the La Pentolaccia restaurant there, and the confections at Maria Grammatico are wonderful as well.

Marsala centro was surprisingly charming and we really enjoyed our visit there, as well as the lovely drive along the salt road.

I think Trapani has better access as far as transport. Absolutely loved Western Sicily. Will definitely return.

"We rented apartments from Garibaldi Apartments which have a lovely seaview."

I had a really bad experience with Garibaldi apts and I would not recommend staying at them. See below.

Bad surprise: no place to park our rental car.

I arranged to rent this apartment, in part, because it claimed at the Google info page and at Booking.com that free parking was available nearby. I had thought it must be on the edge of the Trapani pedestrian mall in Centro storico. “Free parking” for this location is kind of like saying that there is free parking available in Manhattan, if you can actually find a spot. I should have been alerted when the directions came by email and it included “park in the neighborhood” without any further directions on where this free parking was that was supposedly nearby.

The street in front of this apartment is part of the pedestrian mall in the historical district of Trapani and you cannot even drive your car up to the apartment to unload your luggage. I could have rented a place like Ai Lumi further inside the historical district that was more charming but was upfront about no parking being available, if I had had wanted to rent a place where parking was a problem. I did not want to take a chance on having my rental car vandalized, parked far away from my lodging with no one to keep an eye on it.

Theagency people were not very organized.

We called Antonella, the welcome manager, on our cell when we left Castellammare del Golfo and left a message on voice mail that we were coming (no one answered) using the number that came in our confirmation email. We get to Trapani, and my daughter parks next to the sea (illegally it turns out), and I walk up to the building on foot and call again (door is locked). I get some guy who tells me to call the main office. I call them, tell them I am outside the office. The woman at the office claims that they have no record of our reservation. They tell me to call back in 15 minutes. I walk back to our car and a policeman is explaining to my daughter how she can't park where she is. I get back in the car and we start to drive back to Castellammare del Golfo. Antonella calls us while we are on the Autostrada and tells us to come back. We tell her that we are not impressed with Trapani (modern and charmless) or her agency and we are going back to Castellammare del Golfo. She says that she was waiting for us all morning. We tell her we want to cancel (it's obvious to us that there is no place nearby to park our rental car). She says: too late and we have to pay anyway (Booking.com policy). We decide to cancel anyway and go back to Castellammare where we can see our car from our hotel room.
