Are you using public transport or a rental car?

Have you considered flying into Palermo and out of Catania after visiting Taormina?

What is you want to see in Trapani? It's a good base if you are using public transport, but low on sights itself.

Our airline reservations are set and cannot change due to use of frequent flyer miles. We are renting a car. You have a valid point on Taormina...just going there for Mt Etna and to visit the city. Are we better off staying in Syracuse and driving up?

I think that Syracusa is more car-friendly. If you stay on Orthygia (the oldest part of Syraqcusa), you can park cheaply ay Talete.

Taormina is a pedestrian only and you have to park you car outside of it. There are big parking structures you can use. I think the parking cost is less in Syracusa.

If you are driving, you could pickup your car at the airport (whihc is far to the west of Palermo) after you have visited Palermo and Monreale, then head to Erice or Trapani from there.

My daughter and I loved Erice and made 2 day trips there fomr where we were styeing in Castellammare del Golfo. Erice is beatuiful and quaint. Ruins, great view, beautiful churches, and fantastic cermanics

Ortigia has now changed its parking rules. You can now park for free in Ortigia on what were blue lines - however dont park in resident only bays or on yellow lines.

Just back from two weeks on Sicily, trip report follows when I have some time... we drove everywhere and had a complete nightmare in Palermo, as everyone says you will. We found the towns and cities difficult and other roadusers tricky. Out of town is lovely.

Ciao sihirth,

It’s never efficient use of time to divide a stay in a destination as you plan to do with Palermo.

With an arrival and a departure from Palermo, see Palermo only once, either at the beginning or end of your route.

Perhaps hire the car on arrival at Palermo’s airport and begin with Trapani or Erice in Western Sicily. Then return the car in Cefalù at the end of your route, and take the train from Cefalù to Palermo.

Or if you prefer to begin with Palermo, take the train from Palermo to Cefalù and hire the car in Cefalù. Return the car at Palermo’s airport at the end of your route, and take the bus from the airport to the city.

You might also begin with a night in Cefalù - Hire the car at Palermo's airport and drive directly to Cefalù. Then return the car at Palermo's airport at the end of your route, and take the bus to the city.

Factor the time for departing flight - With an early departing flight, you would probably opt to end in Palermo. The airport bus begins its runs at 4.00.

Decide the setting that is most appealing to you in Western Sicily - Trapani is a genuine working Sicilian (fishing) small city, and Erice is the beautiful mediaeval tourist hill town.

You might spend two nights in Modica and day trip to Piazza Armerina from Modica, or you might spend two nights in Piazza Armerina with a day trip to Ragusa and Modica from Piazza Armerina.

Why not stay in Taormina, especially if circling Sicily, and especially if planning to visit Etna?

You could also day trip by train from Palermo to Cefalù.

However, if you were to decide to day trip to Cefalù from Palermo, and you were to also decide to visit Taormina and Etna from a base in Siracusa, you would gain one of those “Taormina” nights for another destination.

You could then add another night around Modica between Agrigento and Siracusa. You would then see Piazza Armerina just prior to Palermo.

You could also add a night around Piazza Armerina just prior to Palermo, returning the car around Caltanissetta, and taking the bus to Palermo;

Kind regards,

Vagabonda
