Suggested 1 week itinerary for Sicily

There is a group of 5 girls going to Sicilly for a week at the end of October. We have never been before and would like to have a relaxing holiday but still see beautiful places. Can anyone suggest an itinerary for 8 days that will give us enough time to relax but see the sights? We fly into Palermo on the 28th October and fly out early on the 5th November. Thank you in advance.

Overall, don't try to see too much or go to too many places--8 days isn't a lot of time and Sicily has so much to offer that it can be overwhelming. And since you'd like to relax, I'd recommend choosing one or two (at most) "base locations" (i.e. where you'll have a hotel booked) and limit yourself to day trips nearby when it comes to choosing other places to visit.

Could you be more specific about "beautiful places" means to you? Is it natural beauty, is it architecture, or something else? That can help folks around here make more specific recommendations.

Welcome to Sicily Brooke_travel54!

Will you also depart from Palermo?

Do you plan to hire a car?

Distances are greater than we expected, don't try to do too much!

Thanks for your responses guys! I think you're right... choosing to do less rather than trying to cover too much. It's not enjoyable when you're racing between places, trying to squeeze so much in!

We fly into Palermo and also fly out of Palermo. From what we've read Palermo is a busy/chaotic city so we were thinking of going straight to another destination and not wasting a night here. Is that a good choice, or is it worth staying a night?

We're more interested in natural beauty... We have looked at basing ourselves at Cefalu and Milazzo so we can do day trips to the Aeolian Islands. What are your thoughts? Are these good bases or are there other places you can recommend?

We haven't really thought about whether we were going to hire a car or not... Is it easy enough to travel to places in Sicilly by train/bus or are we best at looking into hiring a car? In terms of accommodation, we were hoping to grab a good deal on airbnb as it's not peak season...

So after all our research we have decided we definitely want to go to Cefalu, the Aeolian Islands and Taoramina.

We thought the easiest base for the Aeolian Islands would probably be Milazzo, but this place doesn't sound like the nicest place to be staying. Has anyone been to Milazzo and can share their thoughts/experiences? If we didn't stay in Milazzo, what would be a good base for visiting the Aeolian Islands? Is Taoramina too far to use as a base?

We are also wanting to possibly try and sqeeze Ragusa/Syracuse into our schedule but not sure if this is going to be too much after taking travelling times/distances into consideration.

Would love your thoughts about all of this.

If you avoid Palermo, you won’t find driving challenging, and if you prefer natural beauty, then yes, skip Palermo.

Milazzo is a port town, so you’ve decided wisely to base in Cefalù and Taormina – See the Aeolians from Taormina.

Stay flexible with the Aeolians during this period, and check that the ferries are running prior to arriving at Milazzo’s port.

It’s good that you plan to visit the Aeolians between Cefalù and Taormina – Always allocate extra time for the Aeolians on the chance of suspended service due to inclement weather, wind, or rough seas.

Perhaps skip Cefalù and take the direct Interbus service from Palermo to Siracusa – Siracusa has far more to offer than Cefalù, especially past beach season. Then you could visit Ragusa.

I've stayed in both Cefalu and Siracusa and think from your description that you will enjoy Siracusa much more considering the time of year you will be there.

Why not just spend a night on one of the Aeolian islands so you don't have to turn it in to a long and exhausting day?
