Possible itinerary for Sicily?

I've come up with a possible itinerary, and was hoping for some comments as to how doable it is (we plan to rent a car):

4/21/13 Flight arrives in PMO 13:25

4/22/13 Visit Palermo

4/23/13 Visit Palermo and Monreale

4/24/13 Stop to visit Segesta, night in Erice

4/25/13 Stop to visit Selinunte, night in Agrigento

4/2613 Visit Valle dei Templi, night in Piazza Armerina

4/27/13 Visit Villa Romana del Casale, night in Siracusa

4/28/13 Visit Siracusa, night in Taormina

4/29/13 Visit Taormina, night in Milazzo

4/30/13 Ferry to Stromboli

5/1/13 Visit Stromboli, including visit to the crater

5/2/13 Ferry back to Milazzo, night in Cefalu

5/3/13 Flight back from PMO leaving 13:55

I guess one concern is that I just read a prior post about not being able to leave luggage in the car trunk. Are there ways to make it safer? Places with supervised parking?

Welcome to Sicily lebelgo!

The issues of unattended left luggage in the car could be eliminated or mitigated by carefully planning an itinerary – By asking hotels to hold your luggage prior to check-in time or after check-out time; by planning two nights in destinations so you would have one full day at a destination; by only planning sightseeing along the way where there is left luggage storage; by arriving at a destination at night to better position for sightseeing the following morning.....

There is no left luggage at Segesta, but the ticket office at Segesta has indicated a willingness to hold bags, but check on arrival prior to exposing your bags in parking.

There is no left luggage storage at the train station in Castelvetrano or at Selinunte.

Perhaps consider 2 nights in a Western Sicily base, and then visit Erice, Segesta, and Selinunte from that base.

Where to go in Sicily?:

There is left luggage at the Agrigento train station, so you could store your luggage at the train station, see the temples, and then move onward to Piazza Armerina for the night thus positioning for a visit to the Villa Romana del Casale in the morning. You could ask your hotel to hold your luggage since there's no left luggage storage anywhere in Piazza Armerina.

Perhaps you will regret so little time in Siracusa.

And you might spend two nights in Taormina rather than a night at Milazzo’s port.

Sicily is a 2-week itinerary, even without the Aeolian Islands. This itinerary is rushed with little time anywhere and far too many 1-night stays.

1-night stays aren’t very efficient – Time is lost changing hotels so frequently, and luggage is often left unattended in the car with stops at attractions along the way. And with the mid-day closing, attractions are generally closed on arrival once you've enjoyed breakfast, checked out of your hotel, and driven to the attraction.

Two nights in each destination is a good pace and permits one full day to enjoy an area.

Best wishes!

Although I've long wanted to go there, it sounds from what you're saying that I should cut out Stromboli. Does this itinerary sound better?

April 21-23 Palermo and Monreal

April 24-25 Erice with day trips to Segesta and Selinunte

April 26 Agrigento (leave luggage in the hotel for visit of Valle dei Templi)

April 27 Stay at Piazza Armerina & visit Villa Romana del Casale

April 28 & 29 Siracusa

April 30 & May 1 Stay in the Catania/Taormina area

May 2 Stay in Ceflu

If you’ve long wanted to go there, why wouldn’t you go to Stromboli lebelgo? Holidays are about doing what we want to do – Perhaps it's the only time of the year when this is possible!

This itinerary is practical, safe, but is it what you want to do??

Hi lebelgo

Sounds like a busy itinerary style best reserved for Northern Italy and running shoes. I'd suggest no more than 4 stopovers including a few nights on Lipari with a boat trip to Stromboli. Once you've been to Sicily you'll want to return. Maybe catch up on what you miss this time, next time. Good luck, you'll love it!

Consider that April is prior to the Aeolian season, so less possible excursions from Lipari to Stromboli - If you'd like to trek Stromboli, stay on Stromboli.
