Where to base - Can't decide

The case: Landing in Palermo 8th of july - leaving 22th from Palermo.

We'll spend the first to nights in the city of Palermo.

The 10th we'll rent a car (probably from Palermo airport), and hit the road.

We can't decide on how many, and what places to base. We'll probably take day trips by car almost every day - but not sure about the distances. I'm thinking three bases (are two enough?).

I'm thinking something like:

- A few nights (10th to 15th?) west of Palermo (not too far from Castellamare del Golfo?

- A few nights (15th to 19th) on the north coast - not too far from Cefalu?

- A few nights (19th to 22nd) in the south east, Taormina?

Or should we have a base further south/east?

Tips and opinions highly appreciated.

Please check your earlier thread - tripadvisor.com/…49952622

Check (conservative) estimated driving times and distances on ViaMichelin.

http://www.viamichelin.com/

You would at least expect a base in Western Sicily either at the beginning or end of your route depending on when you plan to stay in Palermo, and also a base in Sicily’s southeast.

Where to stay in Western Sicily?:

And then at least one more base either around Taormina or Cefalù, but consider that you could add a night to Palermo and take a day trip to Cefalù via public transport.

Then perhaps spend a day (not necessarily an overnight) in Agrigento as you traverse Sicily.

Thank you very much for your reply!

We've decided to end our stay close to the airport in Palermo. (We don't want a long drive from the east coast on the day of the flight).

The end of the trip is then settled - 18th to 22th is booked. We landed on Castellammare del Golfo, on the Hotel Cala Marina. tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g608929-d600228…

Looks like a charming hotel - and the executive double room with balcony and panoramic sea view was fairly priced.

On arrival (8th) we'll stay a couple of nights in Palermo city centre (without car). Considering the Hotel Porta Felice. How would you rate the location of that Hotel?

South east is a must. Ragusa and Syracuse were the two places we stayed. Between the two places we stayed 5 nights and explored the southe east from there. Both places have nice places to spend the evening and good places to eat. A bit touristy, but as everywhere, one street away from the main tourist area and you can enjoy local feel. Both places are great.

We now have a few night north west (Castellammalare). Should we skip overnight stays in other cities on the north coast, ie Cefalu? Advice appreciated.

After reading a bit more on this forum, we've found several reports of the beaches in Castellammalare) to be quite bad/dirty etc. Comments from Vagabonda or others? I might want to cancel the booking.

Our bases should have:

- Good beaches

- Nice, clean feel, with decent restaurants etc for the evening.

- Conveniently located for day trips by car

Suggestions? I'm confused..

Prego Norwegian1985,

Castellammare del Golfo is a half-hour's drive to Palermo’s airport, so it’s a convenient last destination for the airport, but it’s not a good destination for clean beaches!

Two weeks in Sicily and only based in two towns:

tripadvisor.com/…38585232

Cala Marina is located at the harbour so you wouldn’t swim there.

Perhaps consider Scopello - tripadvisor.com/…49961468

Hotel Porta Felice is a very nice hotel in Palermo's historic centre, but - transportation from palermo airport to Hotel Porta Felice:

The northern coast offers less to see and do than the southern coast – If you’d like to see Cefalù, take a day trip from Palermo.

Thanks.

I see you're saying there's less to see/do on the north coast.

In your opinion should we skip a base in the north west altogether, and focus on the south-east?

Perhaps decide what YOU would like to see and do - Compare what's available on the northern coast (Cefalù, Tindari, Halaesa, Madonie, Nebrodi....) to what there is to see and do in Sicily's southeast (Siracusa, Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Vendicari, Cava Grande del Cassibile, Pantalica....).
