Is Sicily in the first 2 weeks in August a mad idea?

I have been planning a 2 week trip to Sicily with my husband - we are both in our 50's and reasonably independently well travelled. We prefer to just book flights and make hotel bookings ourselves. I am just on the point of booking flights for 31st July - 14 August, but have just been told by some work colleagues that Sicily in august is horrendously crowded with huge queues for everything....... and that we would be mad to go in August. I thought it would be 'busy' but managable. Are we mad to continue with our planning.

Our hoped itinary was to visit Palermo, Agrigento, Taormino and Siracusa - possibly Selinunte and more. We are not beach orientated but more interested in archaeology, sites and of course the culture and food.

Any advice gratefully received

Keep in mind that it will be very very very hot and that you won't be able to go sightseeing in the afternoon. I was in a 2 weeks trip in Sicily in mid August a few years ago with a party of twelve and we planned to go sightseeing early in the morning and we spent the rest of our days on the beaches chilling in the Mediterranean see.

Welcome to Sicily travellerfamily988!

August is hot, crowded, the peak of peak season when Italians holiday (especially Ferragosto 15 August), and August is the most expensive time to visit, so there are better months to visit Sicily.

Cities like Palermo are less crowded since locals holiday at the coast.

Archeological sites are open, but avoid midday hours when it’s very hot and bring plenty of water.

Piazza Armerina’s Villa Romana del Casale is open until 23.30.

Prego travellerfamily988,

With planning, it can be done. Perhaps open-jaws your itinerary with an arrival in Palermo and a departure from Catania. Since Siracusa doesn't have a beach, August isn't peak season for Siracusa, but Taormina will be very crowded.

Good luck with your planning!

I hope you can come because if you love archaeology and good food Sicily is the place to go. And I think that you'll change your mind about beaches when you're here.

I personally think it's too hot and too crowded in August and you wouldn't see Sicily at i's best if you can move the trip to September it would be better.
