Renting a car vs. hiring a driver from Catania to Taoramina

We are landing mid-morning in Catania on a Sunday and are thinking of going directly to Taoramina. We are staying there for two evenings and will be arranging to tour Etna for a half day on the third day, before heading to Siracusa in the early evening. Though we know we need a car to conveniently reach other destinations throughout our trip, does anybody have any guidance as to if we would do better to hire a driver to take us from Catania to Taoramina and rely on taxis or car services for the short stay there versus renting a car right away?

While in Taormina you do not need a car at all. All the major sites are within walking distance, if you stay near or around the main street Corso Umberto (most major hotels are located very close). To go to the beach there are cable cars or buses through out the day. If you want to go to Castel Mola, there are buses again (or you can walk up the footpath, which will take you about couple of hours one way without halts). For the Etna tour, I am sure the tour company will arrange the vehicle. So I would suggest, hire a cab from Catania to Taormina, do the sightseeing in Taormina on foot, and then hire a self-drive car (if you like driving) or a car with driver to go to Syracuse.

Welcome to Sicily bagzpackt!

Weekly car hires are generally less expensive, so perhaps estimate the cost in terms of the number of days for the hire.

You wouldn't require the car in Taormina, but if you were to hire the car, you might then decide to drive to Etna on your own, and you would surely appreciate the car to reach Siracusa.

Also factor the cost of the transfer from the airport to Taormina - Taxis are more expensive than prearranged transfers, so arrange your transfer from the airport to Taormina prior to your arrival.
