April 17 to 25th first time in Sicily

Hello fellow travelers- we are planning our sixth Italian vacation but first time in Sicily. After a week in Naples and Sorrento - we are considering Sicily - plans are wide open and looking for suggestions. Will have rental car and was thinking of flying into one city and out another to avoid backtracking. Only requirement is to be back at Naples airport on the 25 th for an early flight home. Thanks for all advice

Welcome to Sicily defman!

Avoid driving in Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

There's construction on the A3 to Sicily, so fly from Naples to Sicily, or take an overnight ferry, but then hire the car in Sicily. Avoid driving in Palermo and Catania, but you would appreciate the flexibility of a car elsewhere.

In addition to the transport options discussed on this thread, easyJet flies from Naples to Catania and Palermo.

Getting there:

Sicily is a 2-week itinerary, so with only a week, focus on Eastern or Western Sicily, or highlights from Eastern Sicily to Palermo.

We were planning to use public transport in Amalfi - so rental will be in either Palermo or Catania. Want to see mt etna and perhaps visit some countryside inns or agrtourismo - does that help? Thanks for your help- following this forum and your advice is impressive

Yes, and thank you defman - It's my pleasure!

Public transport in Amalfi is a perfect plan.

If you'd like to see Mount Etna, some of the countryside, or stay at agriturismi, then fly to Catania from Naples or take the overnight TTT Lines ferry, and then hire the car at Catania's airport. The airport is located west of the city, and so it's easy to avoid driving in the city itself.

You might divide your time in the Taormina or Siracusa areas for visits to Etna, but you might also consider a stay at an agriturismo around Modica, where you would find many agriturismi, and you could explore the countryside and the beautiful Val di Noto.

If you prefer only two bases, then consider Taormina and Siracusa, or Siracusa and Modica.

End in Taormina or Siracusa to more conveniently position for your departing flight.

12 days in Sicily; Taormina for 6. Where to go for other 6?:

Thanks- following your advice- am working towards eastern Sicily - Ragusa, Siracusa and Taormina . Given we have seven nights and some flexibility on late day flights to Naples on the 24 th I am thinking to fly to Catania and the head to Ragusa for three nights - two more in Siracusa and final two in Taormina. Thinking that Ragusa and baroque towns would provide a change from coastal luxe as we are in Sorrento for the previous six days. Then to Taormina at end because we want to see Mt Etna and have heard the town is beautiful - even though touristy How does this sound? We would greatly value your advice on some smaller towns where we could indulge in fantastic cuisine. Thanks so much

Prego defman,

Although Siracusa has the most to see and do and typically commands the most time, it's understandable that you might allocate the extra night to Ragusa for diversity of experience after so much time on the coast.

However also note that you'll visit during a holiday period. With Easter on the 20th, you would probably be based in Siracusa. Many towns like Modica and Scicli have special festivities.

Taormina is touristy, but Taormina is a beautiful town, and there are many good restaurants, and you would certainly find many outstanding restaurants in Siracusa.

The cuisine around Ragusa province is exceptional, as are the wines and cheeses, so spend time in Modica's trattorie, and also experience Modica's chocolate, the pastries and gelato in Noto, Ragusano DOP , the olive oil, and wines.

One last consider is whether to base in Ragusa or Modica.

Modica or Ragusa?:
