Day trips from Trapani suggestions

Hi I am in Trapani from mid to end July 2014 and then back again first week of August 2014. It is my first time in Sicily, although my heritage is Sicilian. I have family to meet however I am looking for suggestions for day trips I can take to do a little of my own exploring, a good cooking class, a must do pastry shop etc - I would love to experience the Sicilian way of life very much.

Also I was told that Taormina is a must do - is it doable in a day from Trapani or should I look for overnight accommodation and things to do there ? Can I get there on public transport from Trapani ?

All help will be welcome !

Taormina is on the other side of Sicily from Trapani. it is not a day trip.

it depend a lot on your own interests on what to visit from Trapani. Erice is an easy day trip from Trapani via The funiva cable car.

Welcome to Sicily Mia M!

Taormina is a tourist resort town, and so not your destination if you would love to experience the Sicilian way of life. There's a high ratio of tourists to locals in Taormina.

But, yes, there's (lengthy) public transport from Trapani to Taormina - Take Interbus from Taormina to Palermo, SAIS Autolinee from Palermo to Aeroporto Catania, and then take Interbus from Aeroporto Catania onward to Taormina.

And yes, plan to spend several days then in Eastern Sicily.

Trapani is the most convenient base for public transport in Western Sicily, and there are many possible day trips.

Take the train or AST from Trapani to Marsala or Mazara del Vallo; Marsala’s Servizio Municipale Autotrasporti Linea 4 to Mozia: AST from Trapani to San Vito Lo Capo; AST or the funivia to Erice; Tarantola to Segesta; Interbus to Palermo; the train to Castelvetrano and Salemi to Selinunte; Lumia to Agrigento; Ustica Lines or Siremar to the Egadi.

There are many opportunities for cookery classes in Trapani and Taormina, but since you'll mostly base in Trapani, and since you would probably enjoy cooking your provincial cuisine, perhaps consider Scuola Virgilio in Trapani, or Centro di Cultura Gastronomica Molino Excelsior in Valderice.

Pasticieria Maria Grammatico in Erice is your must-do pasticeria.
