We do not know where to begin, just staring at the map. Guide books with specifics do not help unless we have a sketch of where we want to be during 2-weeks. We know we want to finish in Palermo, not begin there... So after the airport in our rental, where to-?

The are around Syracuse looks promising. How far from Palermo? What's in between?

So you see, we are beginning with out much of a clue, despite our experience traveling in Europe, including Italy. Help please. George

Hi George,

Maybe try being a little more specific, as if you get any responses they may not be that helpful, what about fly to Palermo, sit at the airport and then leave???

What most people do is to spend some time looking at websites, researching the country and then ask more specific questions on here.

If you want to spend tine in eastern Sicily (like Syracusa) it woudl be better to fly inot Catania nad out of Palermo. Sicliy is a big island. East to west it takes 4 hours to drive across.

Google map of Sicily

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms…

Catania is the yellow push pin, Syracusa is the blue surfer, Palermo is the yellow outlined house, and the Palermo airport is the blue airplane

hi: here is "a sketch"....read about Syracuse/Ortigia and the Val di Noto region (Noto, Modica, Ragusa) in the southeastern part of Sicily. Then read about the western area (Palermo, Cefalu, Erice,Trapani, etc.). I would also read up on the incredible Greek and Roman ruins if they interest you (Agrigento, Selinunte, Segesta).....something will speak to you and that is where you can start planning ... make a little list of what you'd like to see in each area. Two weeks can give you a decent overview of those two regions. Then come back to the forum and you can receive advice as to good routes, travel times, etc.

Welcome to Sicily George123121!

Take heart for you surely aren't the first on these Sicily forums who hasn't known where to begin with planning a holiday to Sicily, and those before you have designed phenomenal itineraries, and enjoyed amazing holidays.

Sicily is the kind of place that you wish you could decide and plan after you've already been.

Sicily is large, larger than expected, and although there's so much to see and do, the pace is slow and time consuming. Sicily is a land of contrasts from chaotic cities to serene and isolated coasts and mountains. And even as Sicily tugs at your heartstrings, it frustrates and requires tremendous patience.

Begin with what you know - You'll enjoy two weeks in Sicily. Sicily is a 2-week destination.

You know you'd like to end in Palermo, but not begin in Palermo, so then consider an open-jaws itinerary with an arrival in Catania, and a departure from Palermo.

Ideally you would book a single straight-through transatlantic (one itinerary) ticket to Sicily.

You plan to hire a car.

Siracusa is promising, a place to begin with an arrival in Catania.

Would you prefer to base in two locations and take day trips, or would you prefer to move around more frequently and tour rather than base?

If you decide to base rather than tour, then Siracusa is an optimal base in Eastern Sicily.

What are your interests (archeological sites, wineries, volcanoes, beaches, cities, museums, mediaeval towns, mountains, UNESCO sites....)?

Would you like to stay in Palermo, or day trip to Palermo?

You're on your way, and hopefully it seems less daunting.
