East Sicily

Hello, my family is excited to visit Sicily mid September this year (2 couples and young toddlers) for 5 nights but was not sure where to base ourselves. We would like to visit Taormina, Catania, Siracusa, Etna and Noto - would you recommend basing ourselves in Catania and doing day trips from there? We will hire a car to do this. Or would you recommend staying in Taormina, as it's more relaxing? Or would this be too far away from the other locations to do day trips? Where would your favourite place be? Thanks!

If you stay in toaromina you are far away from the SE, I would recommend Ortiga in Siracusa as there is a lot to explore there plus it is a short 1/2 hr drive from Catania. Once on catania's ring road you can then get to etna or toaromina.

Welcome to Sicily sashasmithy!

Only base in Catania if you don't hire the car. Catania is a convenient base via public transport, but avoid driving in Catania.

If you plan to hire a car, then base outside Catania.

Consider dividing your time between Taormina and Siracusa.

See Mount Etna from Taormina, and see Noto from Siracusa.

You might visit Catania via public transport (train or bus) from either Taormina or Siracusa any early morning but Sunday, since the market is closed on Sundays.

If you were to select only one base, then base in family-friendly Siracusa, and Ortigia is the most scenic and charming area of Siracusa.

If you decide to drive to visit Catania, then park at the airport, and take the Alibus 457 from the airport to the city.

It's an hour's drive between Catania and Siracusa, or between Catania and Taormina.
