We decided to enjoy « the real Italy » during our stay in Sicily by adopting exclusively Agriturismi for lodging (with exception in Ortigia). Anyway we are fed up with hotels of all kinds and we made a lovely experience with Agriturismi in Northern Italy. But there is potentially one problem: To access Agriturismi one has to have the car, hence we are renting car with Hertz for the whole duration of our stay. I remember to read somewhere that the renters in Italy are forbidding to drive on non-paved roads (probably the insurance wouldn’t cover any problem). When I choose the Agriturismi the criteria were the beauty (and yes there are real jewels), authenticity, … but certainly not road infrastructure. I suspect that there will be the cases where the access is via non-paved roads (we privileged the secluded countryside places).
How to deal with this in respect to the car rental? Anybody have experience with this?
