4 of us visiting Sicily in October without a car. So far we have booked an apartment in Palermo for 4 nights hotel for 2 nights in Agrigento, and I have found some nice apartments in Syracusa (ortygia) for our last 5 nights. Where possible we prefer to do day trips rather than changing accommodation every night especially as we are relying on buses between locations.
My question is, how to fit in a day visiting Etna - I know it's not well connected to Syracusa, but would it be possible to get there and back in a day and if so, what route - would we need to go via Catania? I have tried to search for answers but the responses all seem to advise seeing Etna from Taormina, which isn't on our list this time. Grateful for any advice.
