Trying to plan trip in january

We are coming to Italy to go skiing in the Dolomites in January and have 2 weeks pre skiing to do some other travelling.....how do you chose??

Due to the weather, Sicily has been suggested to us. I was wondering if it sounds practical to take a train from Milan to Sicily (over a few days) then base ourselves somewhere and get a hire car.

We like outdoors activities - walking/hiking/skiing (would love to ski Mt Etna) but would also like to see a bit of history/ old buildings, etc. So while this sounds a bit open ended can anyone suggest:

Where to base ourselves (Happy to stay in 2-3 places max.)?

Can we do a day ski trip from somewhere (need skis/boards)?

Should we look at guided tours (small group - recommendations?) given we have limited time?

"Must see" places in Sicily?

Also where to be for new years eve? (not sure if able to get to Sicily by then)

It’s generally best to visit what is "best" and "in season" during the time of your visit…..

January is low season throughout Italy with the exception of the ski resorts. Cities are a good bet in winter.

It's not at all practical to take a train from Milan to Sicily - Trains compared to Planes:

www.slowtrav.com/italy/trains/intro.htm

Alitalia, Air One and easyJet fly from Milan Malpensa to Catania. easyJet flies from Milan Malpensa to Palermo. Air One flies from Milan Malpensa to Trapani.

Alitalia and Meridiana fly from Milan Linate to Catania and Palermo.

Ryanair flies from Milan Bergamo to Palermo and Trapani.

You could certainly base in Eastern Sicily, perhaps around Siracusa, and then ski Mount Etna. Enjoy New Year's Eve in Catania.

The Michelin Green Guide ranks destinations, and may help you decide what you would like to see and do.

You might also stay on Mainland Italy and take the train between cities - Florence, Rome, Naples....
