Messina sights

Our cruiseship will dock at Messina for a day in Sep 30 from 7:00am to 5:00pm. To be safe, that gives us 8 hrs.

Cruiseship Shore excursions are not interesting enough and expensive. we don't speak Italian. How's Mortelle resort which is 8 miles away? is it easy to get there or any other suggestion, it could also mean sights to see. Thanks

There is not a lot to see in Messina.

A bus or train trip to Taormina would be very enjoyable. People will tell you that Taormina is touristy. But, there is a reason for that. It is a beautiful area with fantastic views of Mt Etna and the coastline. The town itself is very charming, and the Greek amphitheater alone is worth the trip.

It would certainly be worth taking a day trip to Taormina. Eight hours would give you sufficient time for transport from Messina to Taormina, and time to tour Taormina. Taormina's Teatro Greco (Greek Amphitheater) alone would be worth the trip. The views of the amphitheater, sea, and Mount Etna are staggering! Walk the gardens of Giardino Púbblico (Public Garden) and Parco Duca di Cesarò; stroll the main street, Corso Umberto I; visit a few of its churches: cable car down to the beach in Mazzaro; lunch at some of Taormina's excellent restaurants and cafes; and just enjoy!

clairann2000, if you have already seen Taormina, consider an excursion of Etna!
