Driving from Palermo to Catania Airport

Hi there, we are planning a short trip round Sicily next fall. Our plan is to take the Ferry from inland Naples to Palermo, stay overnight and then go for Taormina and Catania, with possible stops along the way. My questions are:

a. Is it possible to rent a car at Palermo (city or airport) and return it in Catania? Suggested rental car agencies.

b. What itineraries would you recommend? Our only "must see" is Taormina.

P.S.: Being from Argentina and living in Buenos Aires, neither my fiancé nor I are scared of crazy drivers and pedestrians and murderous bus drivers.

Welcome to Sicily Mechka!

If Taormina is your destination, perhaps consider the TTT Lines ferry from Naples to Catania.

Yes, it's possible to hire a car in Palermo or at Palermo's airport and return the car in Catania or at Catania's airport - Check the AutoEurope website. AutoEurope is a broker dealing with all suppliers.

When booking your vehicle, ask about the supplier and avoid Maggiore, Autoeuropa (not AutoEurope), Sicily by Car, Thrifty, Advantage, Locauto....

Do you need to hire a car in Sicily?

Vagabonda, thank you so much!

Do you think Catania to Palermo is better than Palermo to Catania? Our choice, basically, is made by the ferry line. As far as we could research, the route we found was Naples to Palermo.

Any other suggestions?

Prego Mechka,

Alitalia and Air Italy fly direct from Naples to Catania, and Alitalia flies direct from Naples to Palermo – Book on Alitalia’s Italian site for the lowest fares. Curreri Viaggi runs direct bus service from Sorrento to Naples.

Save Money By Booking Alitalia Flights “Like a Local”:

TTT Lines runs overnight ferry service from Naples to Catania.

Tirrenia or SNAV run overnight ferry service from Naples to Palermo.

You could fly to Catania, hire the car at Catania’s airport located west of the city, and drive onward to Taormina.

Prego Mechka,

It's a 50-minute drive from Catania's airport to Taormina.

One more question. Since we are planning on arriving at Palermo early morning after an overnight ferry and spending that night in Palermo, where would you suggest we rent a car? Should we rent it on our first day or on the second as we head out of Palermo? My guess is renting a car while staying for the day in Palermo would be a total waste plus the hassle of finding parking...

Take the SAIS Autolinee bus from Palermo to Catania's airport and hire the car at Catania's airport - Then drive onward to Taormina.

Return the car at Catania's airport before taking the Alibus to Catania from the airport.

You wouldn't require a car in the cities.

9. Re: Driving from Palermo to Catania Airport

I am doing exactly what Vagabonda has suggested above. I am taking the bus from Palermo to Catania Airport and picking up a hire car from there. When I was looking at booking a hire care from Palermo to Catania I was being quoted a €50 one-way drop off fee. I decided that the bus (~€15) made more sense and its only 2h30 minutes.

Mecka, in Italy it is always better in to take a car in the airport than in the city, due to the following three reasons: a) airport officers have higher change to be more civilized; b) choice of available cars is better; c) working hours range is wider (prices are equal here and there).

Therefore, you might consider getting a car right away in the airport, or return to the airport next day.

Try to avoid local car rental company Maggiore, since their service quality depends on a bad/good day experience of the officer that will deal with you.

Take common european suppliers:

europcar.com/car-rental-ITALY-PALERMO.html

http://www.sixt.com/car-rental/italy/palermo

orangesmile.com/carrental/italy/sicily-paler…

hertz.co.uk/rentacar/car-hire/italy/palermo

For me, the best itinerary is just go up to Etna via Strada Provinciale 92, than at the level of 2000m, head via the trail road to the cone and go to the max possible altitude (you can be not allowed to get to the 3100m mark nearby the pick)!
