Combine Palermo With ?

We are researching a stay in Sicily for next Oct. 2014. We will fly into Palermo for 2 nights then want to combine another town for 6 nights then back to Palermo for 2 nights. Prefer more Sicily than touristy, possibly on the coast with enough open to keep us happy without being over-runned by to many other tourists. Any suggestions?

Why divide your time in Palermo at the beginning and end of your holiday?

Maximise your time and see Palermo once either at the beginning, or at the end of your holiday.

What time would you arrive and depart Palermo?

Do you plan to hire a car or take public transport?

Trapani and Siracusa are top choices! Interbus runs direct bus service between Trapani and Palermo's airport if you don't plan to hire a car.

Due to the airport being in Palermo we thought it would be easier to spend a couple days in Palermo to get settled and explore then off to another town then back to Palermo to finish seeing what we missed the first time then fly out of the airport. Not sure of arrival time but hopefully as early in the day as possible. We will use public transportation.

Palermo's airport isn't located in Palermo. The airport is located west of the city, about an hour's drive by bus.

Time is lost packing and unpacking, and checking in and out of hotels, so dividing your time in any destination as you plan to do with Palermo isn't maximising your time.

You might begin in Palermo and end in Trapani, or vice versa.

Interbus also runs direct bus service between Palermo and Siracusa, but if interested in Siracusa, you might open-jaws your itinerary with an arrival in Catania and a departure from Palermo, or vice versa.

If arriving and departing in Palermo, then head directly to Siracusa, and end in Palermo to position for your departing flight.

First decide between Trapani and Siracusa, and determine if you're more interested in seeing the attractions of Western or Eastern Sicily.

Now you got me wondering. Maybe Catania would be a better choice to fly into then go to Siracusa. Any idea how far the airport is to Siracusa and is it doable to land in Catania and take public transportation straight to Siracusa? We would be flying from Boston (USA) so it would be a long flight, probably Boston to Europe then to Sicily in the same day. Would it be better to go to Catania for a couple days to catch our breath then off to Siracusa for 6-8 days then back to Catania to fly out?

Siracusa is less than an hour's drive by car from Aeroporto Catania.

Interbus runs direct bus service between Aeroporto Catania and Siracusa.

Yes, you would connect via a major European hub, typically Rome.

Ideally you would book a single straight-through transatlantic (one itinerary) ticket to Sicily. Your luggage would continue straight-through to Sicily, and if your flight were delayed on arrival, the airline would place you on the next outbound flight.

Prearrange a transfer or take the direct bus on arrival to Siracusa, and since Siracusa is so near the airport, there's no reason to spend the last night in Catania. The bus service begins very early in the morning, and you could always prearrange a transfer.

But perhaps consider dividing your time between Siracusa and Ragusa. Interbus also runs direct bus service between the airport and Ragusa, and Ragusa and Modica are wonderful for local experiences.

You are giving me more and more ideas of where to go and what to do. I see I have lots of research to do. However, Siracusa appears to be a base for us or at least to spend most of our 10-13 days in Sicily. Probably will split it between another town reachable by bus. Ragusa looks great. Maybe another thread in the Siracusa forum would be best.

Siracusa would be a splendid place to spend your holiday!

And surely Ragusa province is very special, UNESCO sites, beautiful towns, a Bandiera Blu awarded coast, wineries, delicious cuisine, a high standard....

I highy reccomend fyling into catania, you could base 3 nights at Sirracusa(in ortiga) and from there explore some great restraunts history and beaches near buy. Depending on what you want to do;

Beach holiday 3 days at sampieri, the most chilled out beach in sicily. (no tourists only sicilians)

More history and culture: drive over to Aggrigento and stay 1 night near there, then on to trapani for 2 nights. or/ go to Toaromina(lots of tourists but beutiful) for 3 nights and see etna and surrounds.
