Staying for 5 days in Syracuse - Any tips?

Hello all,

My fiancee and I will be visiting Sicily for the first time for 5 days this July and will be staying in Syracuse. We won’t have a car at our disposal and I already checked the bus schedules of interbus.

I tried looking for online companies that do 1 day tours/excursions departing from Syracuse however I did not find any. Does anybody know if there are any companies that do tours departing from Syracuse please?

Furthermore, I appreciate any suggestions on what to do and where to go in Eastern Sicily providing info on how to arrive etc please. We like culture, history, food and wine.

I have already planned on visiting:

- Ortigia (on foot)

- Taormina (using interbus going through Catania)

- Etna (found tours online departing from Catania)

I also wish to visit these but did not find ideal bus routes/schedules, maybe you can point me to the right direction:

- Noto (only 2 buses from Syracuse in the afternoon by interbus)

- Cavagrande

I am open to any feedback as I wish to enjoy my time there as much as possible.

Thank you in advance.

I have booked 1 day in Agrigento, 2 in Ragusa, 3 in Ortigia and thinking about 3 in Taormina. We are planning to spend a day exploring Taormina, half a day at Etna. Would you recommend we return our rental car in Ortigia or keep it to travel to Taormina and airport to Catania?

Your comments would be appreciated.

Thomas - I see 3 buses going, 5 returning...and quite a few train options (unless you are traveling on a Sunday). I guess there are 2 afternoon buses technically, since one is at 11, but you should find something to fit.

For what it's worth, most would suggest staying in Ortigia rather than Siracusa....

Welcome to Sicily Thomas M!

Tours are available from Siracusa.

You might take Interbus from Siracusa to Taormina, but also consider the train, even if you would then take a bus up to Taormina from the train station.

Take the train or Interbus to Catania.

AST runs the bus service from Catania to Etna.

Take the train, Interbus, or AST from Siracusa to Noto.

Bus service from Syracuse to Noto & Ragusa:

There is no public transport to Cavagranda, and it's officially closed.

Hi ilovewithitalia,

What time is your departing flight from Catania?

You might drive from Siracusa to Taormina, and then return the car in Taormina.

Thomas - With your stay in July, chances are you have plenty of time to change lodging if you choose. Again, I will suggest that you investigate Ortigia rather than Siracusa, especially since this sounds like it might be a special trip.

On the other hand, I am sure that no matter where the two of you stay, it will be romantic and thoroughly enjoyable! But Ortigia is a charmer....

Ortigia is Siracusa, the historic centre of Siracusa.

Ortigia is the most scenic area of Siracusa, but also touristy.

Mainland Siracusa is working Siracusa.

Well, of course there's a reason it's touristy, no? It is the spot where most people want to stay. Thomas already knows they can walk there. I am not sure if he knows that most people prefer to stay there, nor if he has researched it as a possibility. As said, I am sure the two of them will have a marvelous trip...but in Ortigia - depending on the lodging - it might be even more so.

So Thomas, you plan to spend 5 days in Syracuse.

Since Syracuse, Siracusa, and Ortigia are so often used interchangeably, where exactly are you staying? Are you staying on the mainland, or on Ortigia?

Ortigia is the historical centre, and the most beautiful area, and as playaguya has indicated, also where most people want to stay.

It's not that there aren't wonderful accommodations on the mainland as well like Musciara Siracusa Resort with its own private beach, but the mainland is working Siracusa, and Ortigia has the vibe and amenities for tourists.

Vagabonda, he already said they are staying in Siracusa, the mainland. That is what prompted me to think that he might not know about the advantages of staying in Ortigia instead, if he is at all interested. But...now that all this time and these messages have come & gone...if he is happy with the lodging - and depending on its location - it might be only a 10-15 minute walk to the bridge. Or half an hour or more. He did say they planned on walking to Ortigia, so perhaps their place is reasonably nearby. Thomas?
