Help with transportation options to Taormina

We will be staying in Potenza and then traveling to Taormina. Would like to know the best options to get toTaormina in the early evening on the same day as we are departing.

1. Drive to Taormina by car even though we have heard horror stories about the condition of the autostrada?

2. Drive to Naples leaving Potenza very early AM in order to catch the 09:50am flight on Alitalia to Catania, renting a car and then to Taormina?

3. Is there ferry service from Naples to Messina and when does it run? Then car rental in Messina.

4. Is there a hydrofoil from Naples to Messina and when does it run? Then, car rental to Taormina?

5. Train?-although we have heard that it is not the most pleasant.

OR ???

Again, we would need to depart Potenza and arrive Taormina by early evening of the same day.

We are 4 seniors travelling together.

Thank you for helpful advise.

We've done both the drive and the train from Rome to Taormina a few times now.

Whilst the autostrada has always had sections of contraflow as long as we've been doing the trip, it was always pretty straightforward to drive. I would have thought for the hassle and expense of getting back to Naples, then hiring a car again on the other side, it would be much simpler to just do the drive. I should say though that we've always driven overnight which might have made things easier, normally arriving at Villa San Giovanni around 3.30am or so.

If you go by train you could avoid Naples and travel from Salerno instead.

Sorry I have no knowledge of the sea options from Naples, DH gets seasick :)

Thank you for the reply. If we decide to drive back to Naples, is driving to the airport as much of a hassle as driving "in" Naples?

We Flew from Rome to Taormina; very short flight and very cheap; definitely beat the drive or train. We flew on Blu-express.

If you don't have you hotel yet, may I suggest the Hotel Villa Ducale - UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! You won't want to leave! Hotel ph. no: 011 39 0942 28153

Enjoy your visit; it is amazing!

Thank you for your kind reply. Sounds like flying may prove to be our best option. Did not know that Taormina had an airport!...will check it out. We are considering Villa Ducale and it is good to hear the positive recommendation.

Again thank you.

Taormina doesn't have an airport, Catania is the nearest airport and takes around 45 minutes from there to Taormina by car, autostrada most of the way til you get to Taormina itself. You can do it by bus, hire a car or get an airport transfer. Honestly I think all of the options are likely to take the same time, so it's probably about choosing one which seems like less hassle to you or that seems more enjoyable. For me, having to do all the changeovers required in returning the car to Naples airport and then getting to Catania airport and hiring an additional car would seem like more hassle but you might travel lighter than me :) or you might really not enjoy driving.

For a small cost, you may be able to hire a car in Potenza or Naples and leave it in Sicily and fly back to Naples or Rome if that's more convenient for you.

Thank you for the input. Have you driven the autostrada(A3) from the Potenza/Salerno area down to Taormina and if so how was your experience? My understanding is that it has been "under construction" for ages. We still have about 3 months to decide. Again thank you.

There have been direct flights from Dublin to Catania for the last few years so we haven't needed to, but prior to this we used to fly to Rome, then drive to Pompei, spend a day there then drive overnight to Taormina. The roadway did have big sections of being 'under construction' which normally meant that they were contraflow (so down to one lane). But certainly at the times we were driving it wasn't terribly busy. I can't speak to the daytime though :)

Avoid driving the A3 - The A3 is still under construction, and notoriously the worse autostada in Italy!

Flying is definitely your quickest option, giving you a lot more time IN Taormina. If you do fly blu-express, check the baggage fees; (we had an overweight suitcase which they did charge, but we didn't mind since we knew we had no other charges (i.e. rental car, transfers, etc). I called Villa Ducale ahead, and they had a car meet us at the airport. Once we arrived, we walked down the steps of the hotel, and into peace & heaven! We were escorted to the outdoor patio overlooking the sea! We were given wine, and cheese & fruits, and told "No hurry, relax, check-in when you're ready! (even though our room was ready). It is an extremely laid-back experience!!!

As for the food - Amazing! Try the lemon risotta; you won't be disappointed! Have a Great trip! Check out link below!
