Bay Palace Hotel Taormina

Looking for current feedback from anyone who has recently stayed at the Bay Palace Hotel in Taormina. We are a family of 5 adults with a large van. Is there car parking available? Vicinity to attractions? Restaurants - any information is welcome. We will be there in Sept 2014

Welcome to Sicily lonely_traveller_mg!

The Bay Palace Hotel isn't located in Taormina, but in Mazzarò (Taormina Mare) below Taormina along the Via Nazionale, so if Taormina is your destination, you wouldn't find the location convenient. The hotel is convenient for the beach.

Parking is available, but there are very few spaces, and a van could be challenging.

You would take the funivia up to town.

Thank you Vagabonda. We have since changed our minds and will stay in Catania but do a day trip to Taormina instead. Our destination is actually Ferla provincia di Sicracusa but will be travelling all around Sicily to see the most we can in 11 days. WE have hired a van (as mentioned above) and hope this will be the most convenient way around with 5 adults and 5 suitcases.

Thank you for your help.

Perhaps reconsider a base in Catania with a van!

If you plan to hire a van, then base outside the city!!

Buon fortuna!

Sounds like I need it!

My thoughts are:

arrive at Catania airport, pick up the van and drive to our hotel - Ottomood Catania Centro. From here we spend the next day touring Taormina and Etna. If we have time, see Messina (not sure if this is do-able or not). then drive to Ferla for a 5 day stay. This is my mother's home town. From here, see Siracusa, Ragusa, Vizzini, Pantalica etc. then drive to Agrigento for 2 days, then Palermo for 2 days. In the meantime, see as much of the surrounding country and towns as possible. We thought the best thing to do would be to hire a van for the 5 of us and our suitcases. If this is not a good idea, can you advise what would be the better way to do this? This is my first time in Sicily and I do not know what to expect.

Many thanks again

Ottomood Catania Centro offers several locations. Unless you plan to stay in the centre of the city, you'd be fine.

BUT if you plan to stay in the centre of the city, then use public transport, and then hire the car at the airport on your departure from Catania.

Avoid driving in Catania completely.

Messina is an industrial city and there are other destinations more worth your time than Messina.

It's also challenging to drive in Messina.

Return the car at Palermo's airport, and also avoid driving in Palermo.

You should be fine with the van outside the larger cities, although it's best to hire the smallest vehicle that would meet your needs, since smaller towns have narrow streets, and parking could be challenging.
