car rental

What is the best way to get a car when leaving Rome and going into Tuscany? Are we better off renting it outside of Rome - outside of Florence or going into Siena or one of the small towns?

We usually rent a car in the city centre on the day we leave the hotel there, and arrange the final drop off at a different location, such as our airport of departure. This saves the hassle of carrying baggage around (I assume you'll get a taxi from Rome airport to the city centre as no one wants a car whle in Rome?). Major operators like Hertz do this at no extra charge as long as both sites are in Italy. Hertz also make it easy to select different pick-up and drop off sites as they have addresses and maps on their website (hertz.com). Not bad prices either (from about 300 dollars for a week in June to pick up in Rome, drop at the Airport), so I don't think it worth trying to find a cheaper local deal. Remember to go for an inclusive fixed rental rate and not to take up their expensive 10-20 dollar per day extra 'Collision Damage Waier' insurance option. Its cheaper to buy a separate annual CDW - which only costs 80 bucks a year (in the UK at least)

A lot depends on where you are in Rome. If you are flying into Rome and going straight to Tuscany then picking up car at airport makes sense and you would avoid driving on the city streets of Rome, all highway to Tuscany.

If you are staying in central Rome it might make sense to take the train to Florence and pick up car there, car rentals are 4 blocks from train and easy out of city center. Sienna is not well connected for public transportation so don't use that as a jumping off point.

Would also be helpful to know what your plans are after Tuscany so consideration on drop off could be factored in.

We have used carjet.it for rentals in Spain and Italy, found them to be lowest priced and price includes all insurance even the CDW. Carjet is a broker and you end up renting from one of the major rental companies. I'm not sure I understand the whole business arrangemetn but the prices are rught and when we had damage to the car in Spain there was no out of pocket for us.
