Siena as a base for Tuscany?? 5 days of wine and towns

We have booked 5 days in Tuscany...2 nights just outside of Siena and 3 nights inside of Siena (Palazzo Ravizza). We will have done 3 nights in Florence prior. Should we split our time farther apart? We will have a vehicle and love to explore towns and visit wineries. Is 5 days enough, we have some extra days we can add.

Thanks

sherwood,

For me there is never enough time in Tuscany. This will give you some ideas slowtrav.com/italy/tuscany/hs_planning.htm

Take a day and head south toward Montalcino, Montepulciano, and PIenza. That area in the Val d'Orcia we feel is exceptionally beautiful. Montalcino is the center of the Brunello production and there are many nice wineries for tastings and tours.

Thanks travelsitaly and others. The slow travel link was great. Is Siena the best base for being central to everything? Or should we do 3 or 4 days in the Siena area and 3 others in another location?

Siena is also close by car to the Chianti country and San Gimignano. It's a great base for exploring the Tuscan countryside and enjoying wines.

Don't underestimate Siena itself, and take advantage to spend there at least two full days. Its historical centre is charming and each corner would deserve to be discovered.
