Train from Siena to Monterosso or drive somewhere closer?

Hi,

My husband and I are traveling in September and are wondering what would be better.

Currently we are catching a train from Roma to Amalfi then up to Siena.

We are staying in Greve and San Gimignano and are going to hire a car to drive around Tuscany.

After our stay there we are moving on to Monterosso.

My question is, would we be better off taking the train from Siena to Montorosso or driving somewhere closer to drop the car off and then catch a train? I have heard the trip from Siena can be crowded and long so was wondering where we could drop the car closer and if this is a better choice.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any good car hire company recommendations would also be very appreciated.

Thanks

Take the car to La Spezia and then a train from there.

For the rental, try www.driveaway.com.au
