From Pisa - daytrip to Empoli or Siena

I have a day available to go to either Empoli or Siena. I'll be going by train from Pisa and returning to Pisa ahead of a flight departing the next morning. Siena obviously has the longer journey time with the change in trains, so there would be less time to spend there if I chose that option but it appears to have more places of interest than Empoli.

Any advice?

Siena certainly has more to offer. If you can get an early start, it would be worth the journey. I presume there is a reason you are not considering somewhere closer like Lucca?

Yes Lucca is already on my plans. I won't have a car so I'm looking to visit somewhere accessible by train.

Siena, for the reason suggested by Peggy. But if you get a late start, and you like Renaissance art: the Collegiata in Empoli is simply grand.

It's also fun to eat in Empoli ... and walk the streets of its tiny little centro storico.
