International Driving Permit?

My family of 8 will be renting two cars in Tuscany this summer. Do the drivers need anything aside from their us license in order to drive?

You need to familiarize yourself with Italian driving laws, bus lanes, signage: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187893-c140065/Tusca…

You can get the IDP at your local AAA (you don't have to be a member), take passport type photos and its $20.

The rental car agency might not ask for the IDP, however, should you get stopped by the Carabinieri or other Polizia, you will need to have the following on you:

Passport - or a photocopy

Your normal driver's license

Rental car agreement

There are routine stop checks that have nothing to do necessarily with infractions. They are conducting document checks and pull overs are random. If you see a policeman step out with a small paddle with a red circle - you must stop.

On our last 3 trips to Italy the car rental agency (Hertz) asked us to see our IDP. I don't know what they would have done if we didn't have one. Everyone in the office while we were there had their IDP also.

IDP's are necessary and are good for a year. If you are a triple A member, it takes 15 minutes and cost $15 as of last summer, may have gone up by now.
