Roadtrip in tuscany- Book in advance or be spontaneous?

Hello all fellow travelers!

Planing a 12 days roadtrip in Tuscany (April-May 2013) and a bit of northern Italy (lake Como and the area).

We really want to be spontaneous and spend each night or two in a different place, "follow the wind" and not be obliged to stay in places and areas booked in advance.

What do you Italy lovers say- Book in advance or be spontaneous?

Any other tips about the area would be great too :)

We are a couple, traveling in a car.

Thank you!

Just in case you are not already aware most towns and cities in Italy have ZTLs (limited traffic zones) in operation, some of which are camera enforced. Here is a very helpful article on driving in Italy and the ZTLs:

Mesh, Thank you very much. I actualy didnt know that, but either way, didnt plan to get inside Florence, siena and Lucca with my car, but to park it somwhere close by and take a bus into the city.

Would I have problems of a kind outside the big cities? in all of the countryside, that is...?

Thanks in advance,

Rotem

Use a base and tour and maybe book your accommodation in advance. If you're not fussy and / or price is no problem, you'll always find somewhere but a surprising number of the better places (ie good quality / good value) are already full for May in particular.

Most Italian settlements will have a ZTL, but once you know all about them and what the sign looks like they are easily handled, except in big cities.

It is a nice idea to go with the wind, but you will almost certainly lose a lot of your holiday finding overnight parking and then seeking a bed for the night. I honestly think it is better to select 2 or 3 bases, book in advance, work out parking and then spend your days driving to towns and villages in the immediate vicinity of your base.

Thank you Pegipatch!

We have actually decided to do just that.

find a nice base in southern Tuscany (driving from Rome) and after 2-3 nights, find another base in northern Tuscany, probably Chianti.

Any recommendations? Montepulciano or Montalcino?maybe Chianciano Terme?

Thanks in advance,

Montepulciano would be my choice in that area, slightly bigger than the others and so more choice of restaurants and shops, a few more streets to wander. Be warned it is quite steep though.
