Where to stay that would be within an hour outside florence

We are spending a few days in venice then taking a train to Florence but really want to experience a smaller town with beautiful Tuscan countryside scenery. We would like to be able to take the train from Florence to rome after a few days in Tuscany so we would like to be an hour or less outside of Florence. Where would you suggest and why? Thanks!

If you want beautiful small Tuscan towns you should shift your focus away from trains and start thinking car. You can't efficiently explore Tuscany using trains......

Greve in the Chianti, which is under an hour on the bus or, even better, Panzano, another 15 mins further on as this is high on a hill, far smaller, with stunning views of vineyard covered countryside. Otherwise, much nearer, Fiesole, which is about 20 mins on the bus immediately above Florence but perhaps a bit more country-suburb than pure countryside itself.

Relais Villa L'Olmo is an old farmhouse very close to Florence, just 10 minutes, but when you are at Impruneta, you can look on everywhere and you will see just country and old stone houses and earthenware. From here Chianti land begins and you can trek or bike along on nice itineraries. http://www.relaisvillalolmo.com/

Lucca is a lovely town that has a village like feel so that would be my choice.

We were thinking greve since its about 45 min from Florence but thought there might be somewhere else we should consider. San Gimignano was a thought as was lucca. We want a small quaint town to explore with beautiful scenery.

Check out www.lafoce.com. It is 20 minutes from the Chuisi train station; about 1-1/2 hours from Florence but close to many other lovely hill towns.

If you are looking for a countryside setting....an agriturismo is a good way to go.

This one is about 30 minutes from Florence and is absolutely gorgeous.

We loved staying in Fiesole with a balcony view of Florence and an easy bus ride down into the center of Florence.
