Train Itinerary

What is a good train itinerary to visit Umbria and Tuscany? We will have 10 days and are interested in smaller towns. We have seen all the big cities in Italy. We are interested in smaller towns with character and agriturismo/vineyard properties as well as small hotels in towns connected by trains. Thanks.

If you are interested in the smaller towns in Tuscany and Umbria, you need a rental car. Most of these towns do not have a train station. Even if there is a station, the town is usually perched on top of a hill, with the train station down on the plain below. And a car is essential if you want to stay at an agriturismo.

Driving the country roads of Italy is no more difficult than driving country roads in USA.
