Drive Lucca to San Gimignano

July 29th we will be driving from Lucca to San Gimignano ....I would love some ideas of which route we should take....quaint villages and scenery would be great. We have 5 nights once we arrive in San Gimignano from there we plan to visit Volterra, Certaldo and across to Montepucliano .

We would prefer to keep to the least busy roads as we are from New Zealand and driving on opposite side of road.

Thanks in anticipation ......

There is not much of great interest on the more direct routes from Lucca to San Gimignano, so I would suggest that you drive via Volterra. If you keep following the "Centro Storico" signs as you drive into Volterra, you end up at a car park located under the main square.

From San Gimignano, you can easily visit the Chianti area, Montereggioni, Siena, and Arezzo. Montalicno, Montepulciano and Cortona are perhaps getting a little far away.

When we stay in Lucca and go for a drive (non autostrada route) to the San Gimignano/Volterra area we head out from Lucca on the SS439 towards Pontedera. Go through here staying on the SS439 for approx 27km, passing through La Sterza along the way, and you will come to a left turning signposted Firenze/San Gimignano (43km) /Volterra which is the direction you want to take. San Gimignano will be signposted from there.

Thanks for your answers.....do you think it would be a bit too optimistic to drive from San Gimignano ....to Montepucliano ....spend the day there and then drive back to Siena where are booked for 3 nights.

Thanks .......
