Car rental in Florence

We will be staying in Florence and then heading into the Chianti region. We plan to rent a car as we leave Florence. Where is the best pick up location? The airport or the train station? Or somewhere else? We will also be returning to Florence for a night before our flight home to the US. Looking for easy pick up/drop off. Thank you.

Pick up and drop off at the airport, the centre of Florence is a ZTL which means you cannot drive in it. There are frequent buses that run between the airport and the centre or a taxi will cost 20 - 25 euros.

Well, I think not.

You can pick up a car and get out of Florence from the rental offices on Borgonissanti. - about 1/4 mile from the train station, an easy walk. If you follow their directions it is not difficult to get out of town.

I would drop the car at the airport because driving back into town is far more difficult. A taxi back into town is about 20 euro, but you could probably find a hotel near the airport and have an inexpensive taxi ride.

There should not be any extra charge to drop the car at a different location from the pick-up.
