Need Daytrip Suggestions for our May Trip

We'll be arriving in Tuscany in mid May and have 7 days at a Villa just outside of Pienza. There are 10 of us, all adults and mostly able bodied, and we'll have 2 cars. I was hoping for some suggestions on day trips. We're especially interested in visiting wineries, picnicing, visiting small and mid size towns. We will definitely spend one day in Sienna (as we've been there before and loved it!). Could anyone offer any suggestions for good wineries and towns to visit? We're foodies and would also love some restaurant suggestions, does not need to be high end, just authentic. Considering taking a half-day cooking/tasting class, if such an option exists. I've also read some things about monasteries where you can listen to the monks chant, which sounds fascinating. Any suggestions for where to go to experience this? Is Florence a doable day trip? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

This is so easy to answer for basically everywhere within an hour's drive is worth a visit, all your immediate neighbouring villages (ie within 30 mins drive) are must-sees. Monks chant at Sant'Antimo http://www.antimo.it/ and Monte Oliveto but personally I prefer going to the latter for art, the former for chanting / chilling out. Picnic spots again are on every corner, wineries too dotted all over the place, especially up at Montalcino (Altesino perhaps) or Montepulciano (Poliziano, Avignonesi). Florence is very doable in a day with an early start. Personally I drive but you may prefer to take car to either Siena or Chiusi and then the train.

Great area -- dozens of great day trip possibilities. Remember that you need a designated driver if doing wine tasting -- the rules are very strict compared to the US -- have a couple of drinks and you are over the low limits.

There is so much for you to do and Pienza is an ideal base. For wineries look at Montepulciano (vino nobile) and Montalcino (brunello) - there are literally hundreds to choose from but my personal favourites include Fattoria Talosa in Montepulciano (http://www.talosa.it/) Christian will really look after you but you need to book and Angelini in Montalcino (http://www.talosa.it/). If you would like a tour of a dairy farm where they make their own pecorino cheese try Podere Casale (great lunch there too). For restaurants, my favourites include Il Barrino in Montisi (where I live and La Porta in Monticchiello (which is a wonderful countryside walk from Pienza. Hope that helps!
