Husband and I arrive Rome Saturday Sept 6th 9:00 am. Saturday and Sunday checking out Rome sights. then we would like to spend 4 -5 days in Tuscany - Florence, Siena, Lucca, and explore smaller towns. Understand car is difficult and unnecessary in Florence, and maybe also unneeded for Siena and Lucca. So, do we take the train from Rome to Florence, then take trains and buses to Siena and Lucca? We want to rent a car for exploring smaller towns. Where should we base ourselves? Don't want to switch hotels too many times. And where should we rent our car? Next 4-5 days in Cinque Terre. Is it best to catch train from Florence to CT?

We fly out of Rome Sept. 19th. Take train from CT to Rome? Are these the fast trains or local trains?

Thanks, I know that was a lot for questions

Train to Florence, bus to Siena, train to Lucca.

Where to base FAQ:

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187893-c128287/Tusca…

Pick up and drop off cars at airport to avoid the ZTL

Train from Florence to CT (or Pisa to CT depending where you base and which airport you drop car)

Train back to Rome the night before you fly would be a mixture of local and fast trains.

Thank you for the good info. Is FLR – Peretola the airport in Florence? Does a train go there?

Thanks

Yes, that is the airport, but the train does not go to it. There is a shuttle bus between SMN train station and the airport.
