Venice- Tuscany- Cinque Terre

Want to go from Venice to Cinque Terre, preferably no by train. I saw a post from Sept. 2006,

mentioning that they decided to drive, due to all the train changes, from Venice to Tuscany. Stay there and day trip in to the Cinque Terre area. Would love to hear any thoughts/ ideas about this idea. The prior post mentioned they were staying in Sienna. Can't wait to hear back. Thank you

We are in the middle of that itinerary. We flew into Venice and stayed 5 nights. We rented a car from Venice and drove to Cortona for 5 nights and did day trips. We returned the car to Arezzo and took the train to Florence for 3 nights (I can happily recommend Hotel Carrivagio in Florence). We took a morning train to Pisa today and spent 2 hrs before continuing to Sestri Levante by train.

It's been a great trip, transfers have been easy and I've been very happy with the way everything has worked out. We are here for 3 nights and will take the train into CT for one day.,we finish with a night in Milan before flying out.

"due to all the train changes"

Venice to Monterosso via Milan has just the one change of train, and you are in reserved seats all the way, with the cheapest advance price being just €18 per person.

Plus Cinque Terre is no place for a car. Small windy roads, little parking.

We like to travel by car ... We drove from Milan to Cinque Terre to an apartment in Tuscany to Venice and back to Milan. When we went into Florence we took the train. We liked having the car in Tuscany as we visited villages at our leisure. The drive from to Venice was longish & dull but the roads are good. Parking cost in Venice is high but we knew this in advance. This was a 2 week trip. If you research and know what to expect (example parking in Cinque Terre & Venice) then it's fine. Many have a different opinion!
