driving to and spending the night in Cortona. Where should I park to avoid entering a ztl and be close enough to walk to the hotel San Michele?

Since the hotel is inside the walls in the historical center on Via Guelfa, I would park outside the walls in the Parking lot of Piazzale Mercato (labeled #1 on the map provided above). Unfortunately, from here, it is a moderately steep hike up, but it is short. I am sure they will help you with luggage. You could park in the really large "S" lot (labeled so on the map provided)...this is a free lot, off to the right as you take the main road up to the top of Cortona. The only problem with this is then you have to take the escalator up (hope that it is working, the upper escalator never seems to be working) and then walk down Via Nazionale (which is flat thankfully) and then make a left and head "down" the steep hill of Via Guelfa. It is not necessarily harder, just a longer walk. But driving inside the walls can be problematic, the roads, alleys are all very narrow, one way and then there are the ZTLs.
