Train from Florence to Naples

We will be catching a train from Florence to Naples in Sept, 2012. What is the name of the train station in Florence we will need to depart from and will we need to book a ticket in advance or will it be safe to book a ticket when we arrive in Florence or even the day we plan to travel. Also approximately how much will the ticket cost. We would like to catch the fastest train.

See the trenitalia website for the answers to your questions, just look at the trains next week for an idea of costs, the timetable is unlikely to change by September. If you know what time you will be travelling for certain then you may be able to get a cheaper 'mini' fare if you book in advance, otherwise you will be safe to buy the tickets when you get in Florence, but I wouldn't leave it until the day of travel, if you want a particular train.

In Florence, the station is SMN - Santa Maria Novella. The fast train to Naples is about 3 hrs and 72 Euro.

If you are absolutely sure of your departure date and time, you might be able to snag a mini fare. I was sure of my date and time last year and got a mini for 36 Euro.

Except for price, there's not much difference between 1st & 2nd class.

The fare/schedule won't be uploaded until June 9th.

One more question - after looking at the present timetable it seems that there are no trains from Florence to Naples between the times 06.00 and 13.00 the earliest appears to be 16.00 arriving 19.10 - will we have trouble getting a driver to take us to our room in positano this late at night. Is there any chance when the new timetable comes out (possibly June) that there will be trains available from Florence between 06.00 and 13.00?

We're going this summer. Did you fly back out of Rome after Positano or Naples?

Not sure what you are doing wrong but there are trains at almost every hour all day, more than one in some hours. first one at 650 in the morning.

Airfare back to los angeles is the same from naples OR rome, so if sorrento area is our last stop, we'll fly out of naples, even though it goes thru rome, we wouldn't need to train it to the airport, jsut start flying.

another point re rome vs naples (or Florence) airport is that Rome airport is much bigger, farther away and more difficult (and expensive) to get to, get around in, etc.
