U.S. Credit/Debit Card for Student in Florence, Italy

Hello,

Can anyone suggest a low cost, widely accepted U.S. credit/debit card for a college student studying abroad this fall in Florence?

Thanks in advance!

Capital One Visa or MC.

They have a $0 foreign transaction fee which can be up to 3% per transaction with other credit cards. There are a few others that offer the same. So see which offers that and the best interest rate for you.

Also have your student use a debit or ATM card - this is best for getting their cash euros. Italian ATMs do not charge ATM fees, just the fees that your bank will charge.

Thanks, Cat. We're looking at the Capital One Secured Mastercard; will call to ensure that there aren't any foreign transaction fees associated with this card.

As far as a debit or ATM card, should she set up a bank account in Italy or use her account here in the States? She's currently with a regional bank in the area.

Thanks again!

It is easier to just get one here as she will have to set up a codice fiscal (like a SS #) first over there to set up a bank account.

Look at credit unions too. They often have no transaction fees and just a 1% Visa or Mastercard fee to use an ATM.
