Bus or drive to Siena from florence

We have a free day in florence and would like to go to Siena and some surrounding towns. We normally catch public transport but are considering driving so that we don't lose time waiting for buses etc. if we catch buses realistically what other towns could we see on the one day.

if we drive, where should we hire a car from and how easy is the drive given we are not familiar driving in Italy? Thanks

Do not even *think* of trying to drive into Florence. The whole of the central area is prohibited to visitors' cars and there are many many posts from people who have accidentally driven into a restricted area, or in a bus lane, and have been hit with multiple €100 fines months later.

Take the bus. There is more than enough to see in Florence without trying to take side trips.

The center of all Italian cities are restricted not only to visitors, but to any non-resident of that city's center. I point this out only to defuse any eventual conspiracy theories about Italy's mythical scam to fleece tourists.

You can take the bus from the center of Florence to the center of Siena. The trip takes about an hour but doesn't lend itself to exploring other towns.

Most of the car rental companies in Florence are located on Borgo Ognissanti, a one-way street that leads AWAY from the ZTL. Contrary to popular belief, getting out of Florence is not an impossible task. Getting back is a bit more complicated but somehow, countless numbers of dauntless tourists manage to do it and survive! Assuming that the difference in cost of the bus versus the car isn't an issue, the car gives you a world of freedom that the bus can't.

I think it is simpler to just get the bus, there is a fast one that takes 1 hr 15 mins and takes you right into the centre of Siena.

If you only have the one day free, you won't have time to do anything more than Siena anyway.

The bus was easy. Left about every half hour. Just show up and buy a ticket. You don't need to buy ahead and the wait will not be long.

We are arriving from Florence by train and need to get from florence smb station to Sienna . We are considering the bus because it appears it is about 20 minutes faster but I am concerned about the luggage.

Does the bus have luggage space like a tour bus or is it just a city bus .

Also the transfer time between our arrival from Rome is 20 minutes . I hope we can make the connection. Is it easy to find the train to Siena??

Please help thanks

The bus does have space for luggage underneath. Finding the train is easy.

for a day trip -- the bus to and from Siena runs a couple of times an hour -- sometimes 3 times -- when you arrive at the drop off on the edge of the Siena historic center, there is a sign that lists all the departures for Florence and notes which are express (slightly faster) -- we always note the time of the second to last bus and also a couple of times of earlier buses we might want to take --

Siena is a great day trip and couldn't be easier than by bus
