cabs to and from SMN station

A little help here would be really appreciated…

We will be arriving into Florence SMN station at approximately 3.00 in the afternoon on a Saturday and will need to transfer to our hotel, the Gallery Art Hotel, just near the Ponte Vecchio. We are assuming a cab would be the most convenient way to make the transfer and just wondering what the approximate cost of this would be. We are two adults and each will have a medium sized wheeled case.

We will also need to return to the station on the following Wednesday in time to catch a 12.30pm departure. We will already have printed tickets for the train, so won’t need to allow extra time for securing them. Any advice on what time we should ask the hotel to arrange a cab so that we will make the train without rushing?

And, finally, we’d be very grateful for any advice on tipping the cab drivers in these two instances.

Thanks so much in advance...

It is about 1 km from the station to Ponte Vecchio, so the cost will be peanuts: maybe €5 at most.

For the journey back, tell the hotel what time you want to arrive at the station. The hotel will know how long the journey will take.

It is never necessary to tip for anything in Italy. Often taxi fares are rounded up.

That old "no need ever to tip in Italy" sawhorse really needs some revisiting. Hard working Italians, like hardworking people everywhere, greatly appreciate a show of acknowledgement slightly more substantial than a lukewarm smile and muttered "Grazie". The days of no-need-to-tip are long gone. The only time that old rule is observed is when you are actually being served in a restaurant by the owner or a member of his family. The tip doesn't have to be any more than 10% - hardly enough to break the bank much less put a dent in your vacation. Do the right thing!

Thank you both for taking the time to reply so quickly. I really appreciate it. Just one thing though. If it's that close, is it possible the cab driver may refuse the fare? Having waited for some time in the taxi cab queue, he may be insulted by being asked to make such a short trip.

He or she won't be insulted and you won't be refused. The fare should be about €10-12.
